It seems like all the LetRun threads are about Oregon. They are about Oregon's new recruits, about Jordan Hasay (not that I mind), about the other Oregon runners like Luke Puskedras or AJ, or about Oregon's facilities and money. Is Oregon like the running capital of the world or something? I like it in Arizona, but it does seem like everyone assumes Oregon is the best place to run. Is it so?

Pretty odd I agree. USA athletes who train and reside in State of Oregon won only one medal at 2007 Osaka, 2008 Beijing, and 2009 Berlin, while the rest of the U.S. won around 99 medals. I don't see the state of Oregon as having done anything extraordinary for running, track, or field. They've done their share, but that's about it.
I thank you all for the comments, but they really don't answer my question about Oregon. In fact, the one post about 99 medals makes no sense. Distance runners like me know that Oregon is about distance running since before the days of Pre (my hero), and that Africans always win the distance medals at the Olympics. But isn't Oregon where Galen Rupp came from and aren't most of the top american distance guys who are trying to beat the Africans now running in Oregon? So, I understand all that, but what I don't get is why are there all these posts about Oregon recruiting, Oregon facilities and all that. All the other schools have recruiting and stuff, so why don't they have so many posts as Oregon?

no it is not the post of the day. People have been posting this forever. American athletes dominate in sprints and jumps; events that warm weather is ideal to train in. Pretty much the only pro athletes that train in Oregon are distance runners, which we all agree americans are just not as good at as others (east africans in particular). This is the stupidest point i have ever read on letsrun and i hope i never hear it again. It's stupid. You're wrong. In terms of fans and interest in the sport, Oregon is the best. But why live and train in rainy oregon as a sprinter when you can train in sunny california, texas, or wherever the hell else?

So Cal has altitude and cool weather at Mammoth, and other locations. Meb and Deena have medalled at WC and Olys and have won one Major apiece, plus Ryan has kicked butt. The three of them live and train at Mammoth and further south in LA/OC/SD.

Yes, well, T&F is really about 800m and up. You yourself are evidence of this, as you are here, and not on a boring field/sprint/other sport (swimming, archery, etc.) website. So where it matters, to whom it matters, Oregon is the capital of American sports. The sprints and field events are just fillers to allow for sick doubles and triples by distance stars.
10 LA County athletes from USATF brought home medals from Berlin, 7 from the state of Texas, while 0 came from the state of Oregon. That makes LA the T&F Capital for 2009.

For the most part, the people who frequent letsrun are the only ones who know who the hell Meb or any other distance runner is. US distance runners need to win more big races to become household names. US distance runners are mainly skinny white kids who dont even look like athletes.

Because 70 percent of the people who post on these boards are based in the Northwest. So, anytime there is any Oregon, Washington or Portland news, it always sets off a little board rivalry. And since Oregon has such a huge focus on distance running and track and field in general, each of their failures are magnified by the non-Oregon northwest posters, who love an opportunity to take shots at the (self-proclaimed) kings of American track and field.

seems like the people who dislike oregon/nike/pre/distance running(?) that start these threads and argue on medal counts,etc. really have such a limited view of the history of the sport. americans have HARDLY EVER won distance running medals. that is something all of you could check but you are too frickin' lazy to do that.

Pretty sure Fayetteville, Arkansas has been known as the track capital of the nation since way before Oregon claimed the title. I live in central Arkansas and ever since I was an adolescent the city limits sign has told me two things: 1. The population. 2. That Fayetteville owns the track and field credit over any other city/state.
