His 5k times are better than mine, and he is in his mid 40's. Sometimes I feel like he is really proud of this.
This summer I want to beat him in the River Run.
Will he be mad at me if I beat him?

He'd be the proudest MFr in the world if you beat him. Guys in their 40s have a lot of base under their belts, and the top dogs have no problem crushing good high schoolers. Put in some extra mileage and a few extras workouts, maybe throw in some strength training (hills), and you'll be there in no time. Crush dad.
If you run sub 15 I sure he won't be mad.
As a father I was sad when I no longer had to "let" my son beat me in "one on one", but I was proud of my son. I am pretty sure your father will be somewhat disappointed in the fact that his son can now beat him, but that disappointment will be offset by the pride he feels in having a son that can beat him.
I'm coming off a stress fracture and building base. My middle school daughter is coming off of season ending peak. There is no way I would line up with her at 5K right now. I'd be proud of her to finish in front of me, but would have to race her again and 'win' just to shut her up!
It's that first-born competition thing...for both of us.
I was a proud dad when my son beat me for the first time. I also never 'let' him win either. When he beat me, it was a balls to the wall race and he got me in the last 100 yards. Had he been closer I might have elbowed him. Not really.
It was a big day for him because he know I raced him as hard as I could.
If you beat your dad by running 17:30 or slower, he should be mad at himself. He only has himself to blame for turning into a slow sack of crap.
