Any thoughts on who is going to apply? I've heard some big name former athletes applied and some big time DII coaches too, looking to move up.

Who? What do you consider a "big name"?
As someone who applied to the position and received the email from Coach Harrison yesterday with the list of all the applicants names, I think it would be very suspect for anyone else on that list to post names or even hints as the OP did. Be a professional and keep such things private.

Isn't it illegal to reveal the names of applicants for a job? I don't think it was legal for him to show you that (or at the very least, not ethical).
Seriously? Why would a potential employer send out a list of all the applicants? That's total BS.

He didn't bcc the applicants emails, so they were visible to everyone. It's not like he listed everyone in the body of the email. Either way, you are right...we shouldn't have seen the list, so we should keep it private.

that's a little different i guess. not even really unethical but certainly a really bad idea.
There is no such "list" no one knows who has applied. Doubtful any "big names" didn.
Harrison did send an e-mail with all the recipients names viewable. The guy has made so many mistakes like this and yet keeps his job, a sign of how bad PSU for coaching. The job is full-time work for part-time pay. Less than 20k a year. That's not a D1 job. Most of the D2, D3 and NAIA programs in Oregon are better places to coach.
Does anyone think that the person that ultimately gets this job will have any REAL shot to be successful? The the person will be able to drag this program from the basement and elevate it to any sort of competitiveness, that it has never achieved.
Does it really matter who gets the job or is that task impossible?
NO!
Not with current head coach or athletic administration. Maybe one day it will but not with current status.
Really makes me sad as I see a lot of potential but its a program that only wants athletes to fulfill roster spots and keep the academic needs of the program fulfilled.
agreed. this place is a sinking ship. The AD does not care about track/CC. The current head coach is unfit for the position professionaly speaking, and there is limited funding for an assistant coach or the progam.
Is the position truly open?? Or is it just a formality and the current guy Kevin Jeffers will stay on.
Portland is a state school which uses tax dollars and no one here thinks they have a right to see who applied for a job where taxpayers pay the bills?
I think it's great that there is sunshine in Portland and someone should post the applicants' name here and strike a victory for openness.
Why hide the names?
If a private university hides applicants' names, fine, but not a state school.
I call BS. If there is an e-mail, then post it. Or give names of some of the "big time coach"
Job is posted for the current distance coach.

the coach I work for as his GA, applied and received an email from the head coach. He showed it to me. There were at least 30 or so names who applied. The coach at Portland State emailed all the applicants and didn't BCC. maybe that is a sign of what kind of program it currently is. :/

Well, the program was actually fairly successful in Division II (I think) in the 80s....Debbie Myra ran there, was a national champion I believe, as was Dave Henderson.
The Woodard brothers were instrumental in doing a lot with very little - basically volunteering as coaches back in the day...Keith is now at Division III Lewis & Clark (Portland).
But since then, the T&F and XC coaching positions have been a revolving door - so in order to have any way to bring this program up from nothing is to get someone in there that:
1. Loves the sport (because the pay will suck)
2. Has a local history (in order to recruit locals)
3. Is qualified (should go without saying, but doesn't)
4. Has time/money to spend
5. Is patient
That should narrow it down a bit.
So what did the e-mail say? Thanks for applying but we aren't interested in you?
It said they were going to begin reviewing the applicants this week.
So does that mean that those 30 are in the pool of applicants? Or that only 30 applied?
