I've decided to abandon the conventional way of training. Been running for 5 years at a high level and I keep getting beaten by the same old local douchebags.
I'm convinced now that I need to to do more race-specific and pace-specific training. 5:00 pace for a 5K and 5:20 pace for a 10K needs to feel comfortable. But I'm going into oxyden debt by the first mile and third mile respectively.
I don't think running 10 mile runs at 7:00 pace or 18 mile runs at 7:30 pace is doing the trick for me anymore. I've always done two speed workouts a week also but they've been different every week ( 6 x 1000, 8 x800, 10x 400, 3 x 2000) so it's hard for me to establish any continuity.
So it makes sense, given my goals, to start at the bottom rung of the ladder with 400's. I will focus on 10-12 x 400 @ 63 sec w/300 jog recovery ( goal pace, not date pace). I will not do 8 x 800 in 2:20 w/ 400 jog until I can do the former workout comfortably. And so up the ladder I'll go until I'm doing 4 x 1 mile in 5:00, then 3 x 2 mile or 5 x 5K ( marathon training).
I'll go hard two sessions a week with a long run on Sundays and the rest of the the week will be 6-7 mile runs at avg 6:30 pace.
Thoughts?
