When you come to Santa Fe, I recommend you go to the Running Hub, the running store in town. The friendly staff (John Lumley, the owner) will recommend great, endless places to visit. The Santa Fe Striders is a group you can run with if you're seeking company. The store also sells the trail maps. Don't forget- there's Albuquerque, Taos, Los Alamos, and Las Vegas area to seek out as well. Watch out for the mountain lions.
Am also planning a trip to Sante Fe in January. Staying at a resort about 20 minutes out of the city. How common are the mountain lions? Any other critters I should be concerned about out on the trails?
Also, would the Borego trail be open for running in January, or would there be snow in that area?
The bit about the lions was a joke. We've got them up in the hills here but they're not going to be waiting for you behind a rock or anything.
Borrego in Jan. is unlikely unless you're planning on using skis or snowshoes. Go lower with less trees; Rail-trail, sections of Dale Ball, or La Tierra.
shit. brother u scared me out already. Damn lions? So u r saying dont go run on mountains like the trails on them on your own? Have u ran into one or saw one & how did you feel? i guess i wouldnt mind driving down to albaq. once a week for speed but r there lions on the mountains there too?

"a lot."
Don't forget about the bears.
Dude, I heard a guy was running a trail race in Los Alamos, and got chased by a mother bear who had two cubs with her. She went for him. He never ran downhill so fast in his life.
