Kind of a showboat race for OK State... is he really training his team to WIN? My guess is they get smoked by Stanford (and probably Oregon) at nats because these guys just aren't trained to win.

this has always been smiths strategy, tempo regionals, race conference and nationals (assuming they have competition, which this year they did not)
whether or not you agree with it there is a logic to it, I agree that I believe you need to seek out good competition and really race at least once before nats, but dave smith feels differently (and hes got more NCAA trophies than i do)
however they may lose a close one to stanford, no way in hell they lose to oregon (seeing as how oregon places no better than 4th this year)
I think OSU will be fine. However, I think their chances of beating Stanford are very, very small.
Dave Smith is Jerry Schumacher in disguise. Jerry should have won three or four titles at Wisconsin but his unbattletested boys always came up short time and time again. I feel Dave does the same thing and it ends up biting them. Consistently being outcoached is what happend to Schumacher and it appears Dave is going down the same road...unfortunately.

I dismiss Smith bashers as idiots, really. But I have to say I am kinda getting tired of Ok st runner's strategy in these races. Like when Vail was talking how they were looking for Colorado's 2nd and third man at conference. Look, its really simplt shit. If everyone as an individual runs their best possible race than the team will finish with its highest possiblr placing. Screw this working together and watching out for other key runners. They are not watching you and that is why they do better like at last years NCAA's. In cross country the best individual strategy is the best team strategy. Everything else is just noise.

Only if people are robots.
Turns out they aren't.
No matter whether you think it is good for his team or not one things for sure and that is it does not help our sport. Who wants to go watch a race when one of the main teams isn't racing?

That's a really good point I hadn't thought of. I'd have to agree with you.
You're arguing that Coach Smith should have pushed his team to race harder at regionals, irregardless of whether it makes more sense for his guys to be at their peak at nationals? Because its good for race viewers? Looking at the results, Oklahoma State just dominated this regional race, winning by a considerable margin. Although I wasn't able to watch the race, I can't believe that it wasn't amazing to watch six guys from the same team come across the line together at the front of the pack. You're missing the beauty of this race.

I was about to post this as well. Thank you.
Regionals is the prelim for nationals. Nothing more. If a guy in the 1500m or steeple or 5k ran balls out in a prelim for a decisive win, everyone would call the coach an idiot. You can't have it both ways.
REGIONALS ARE THE PRELIM FOR NATIONALS.
Wining by 21 is hardly dominating. Chirchir and Mecheso were pushing it to stay with the pack. The rest were going through the motions but pace was not exactly casual either. There will be a gaps galore in two weeks. You will see. This will all blow up in their face.
I guarantee that Dave Smith is not trying to have all of his runners cross the finish line at the same time at nationals. Today was just a showing of how deep they are, they can run together and still win the regional meet. If I were one of the top teams in D1 right now, I would be a little bit scared of what OSU is capable of doing.
All you have to do at regionals is get a ticket to nationals, nothing more. Why in the world would you want to bust your ass in a 10k race, 9 days out from nationals?

No one is saying they should have run 26 minutes today for a 10k, but resting all through every season is stupid. Maybe if they were training for a mile indoors then rest all the time and do a few sprints, but that does not work well for 10k of cross country.
This is why OSU starts with great talent, and keeps getting slower. You don't need a bunch of 27 to 29 minute flat 10k guys to run 31 minutes and 5 seconds.
Smith does not know how to coach and he does not know how to train runners.

Actually it is a word. A non-standard English word. It's okay to use it...
if you want to sound like an uneducated person.
..... and an incomplete women's team. Great job.

Just looking at Lowe, Fernandez and Vail: they have all improved under Smith -- is this because he doesn't know how to coach?
I stated back in September DC would bethe key to them winning NCCA's. He was their 1st runner today, yes they let him be 1st, but that will built his confidence. There was a 4 second spread between OSU 1-7.I think OSU 4-7 runners will out performs Stanfords 4-7 runners and that will be the key to wins in 9 days. Any of those 4 for either team can be the teams 4th man or 7th man. Their performace will determine who wins.
