Transcript from the Indiana Star after Indiana's disappointing 8th place finish at the Great Lakes Regional.
Reporter: Ron how did the team perform today?
RH: It was just one of those days. Everything that could go wrong did go wrong. Andrew and Zach ran well, but the other guys on the team just didn't have it today.
Reporter: After a disappointing 4th place finish at the Big Ten Championships what did you tell your team heading into today's Regional Championships?
RH: After the the conference championships our guys came back to practice on Monday determined to make the NCAA meet. I had a long discussion with my assistant coach about the possible reasons for falling flat at the conference meet and we concluded that they were running too many miles. So I brought their mileage down from 50 miles a week to 30 miles a week. I injected some intense speed sessions to prepare them for the fast start and finish of the race. As you can see the training worked perfectly. They had total control of the race at 2k and they all had great closing speed. If this was a 5k race we would of scored 30 points, but unfortunately for us it was a 10k race. We will learn from this and get stronger heading into the upcoming track season.
We are looking forward to placing higher in track this year, which won't be hard. The brilliant thing about my training is we are already a step ahead of the competition because we started track workouts 3 weeks ago. The way I look at it is we have a 4 week head start on the teams that made the NCAA Cross Country Championships.
Reporter: That's one way to look at it. Where was Ben Hubers today?
Ben is resting. He needed it after redshirting track last season. We started him slow this fall, but he is into full training now. He has done 4 weeks of 45 miles and is just now starting to transition in track specific workouts. His flying 150's are faster then ever.
Reporter: OK, thank you Ron. Good luck and thanks for your time.
RH: You bet, the program is heading in the right direction.
