On a track, starting from a stand still...
Who would win in a 200m race, Mark Cavendish or Usain Bolt?
Obviously Cavendish's top speed would be much higher, probably around 35-40mph by the end... But it would probably take him at LEAST 5-7 seconds to reach Bolt's average speed of just under 24mph, which Bolt obtains practically instantaneously.
I'm gunna say Cavendish by a nose...
Thoughts?
I highly doubt Mark Cavendish could run over 35mph.
Does Cav get a rear cassette, or have to ride fixed gear? If it's fixed gear I'll give it to Bolt. If he can change gears, it'll be Cav. He can give away a second or two over the first hundred meters because he can hit >40mph in a sprint.

this has been discussed by me and my friends alot... we figure it comes down to the start... if Cav is clipped in and held, pursuit style he creams it..... if not Bolt wins.
If you assume that Cav would hit his max speed of ~45mph right at 200m and accelerates uniformly over the whole distance, he would take 20 seconds to cover 200m. Of course, his acceleration isn't completely uniform, but I figure it also takes him less than 150m to get to top speed. A close race either way.
I did think on a fixed gear (but not changeable) Bolt would win, but not so:

How about a match race over 800 meters, both on foot?
wow i guess that data basically indicated a landslide...
lol, well 100m?? according to those splits, it looks like it would be very close. Bolt would probably take it though in my opinion.

people underestimate the power generated by sprinting cyclists....the amount they can accelerate and the speeds they reach are incredible

Without looking up track cycling accel times, I think 150m would be more interesting, since prime Bolt should take it over 100m and Cavendish over 200m.
