omg, such ignorance here...running requires zero athleticism, therefore, it is not a sport, it is simply an activity to gain and increase fitness, my son's team ran xc, for fitness, boxers run, to gain fitness...that's all it is, some people decide to run races, that does not make it a sport, firemen have firemen competitions, does that make it a sport? they have waiter competitions, does that make it a sport? NO!!! RUNNING IS NOT A GAWD DANG SPORT

You're joking, right? Zero athleticism? There is a huge difference between a basketball player or boxer jogging around at 12 minute pace for conditioning and someone redlining for 5000 meters. Please.
And anything that involves competition is considered sport. Hunting is considered sport. You sit in a tree and shoot an animal while still sitting. Those fireman competitions and waiter competitions are indeed considered a sport to those competing in them.
Please tell me I'm taking this way too far and that you are actually being sarcastic in your post.
The funny part is that people here really think that shoes make a big difference. You put a pair of low top Jordans on Ritz and he would still contend in the US XC champs today. Of course if the course is really wet and muddy, then that's a different story, but this course is SC looked like a dry grassy golf course. Don't believe the hype. Shoes don't matter that much...

Shit that was work related
Of course running is a "sport"...basketball is a "game"..
By definition, track and field and cross country are considered "sport"
Hasn't anybody read any books about Snell, Halberg and them there guys?
If running is not a sport then why is it one of the oldest and most traditional sports competed at in the olympics.

Or bball, baseball, any sport. It is no different. Sure, there can be studs at the A level, too, but show me an state champion A-size public school anywhere in the country that has the kind of depth on its xc team that the AAAA teams at the state meet in the same state have. At best, they are extremely rare.
In XC you only need 5 runners; in football you need more than the basic 11 players. The size of the player roster and the very nature of the sport dictate that the larger schools have an advantage. A fball team with 25 players is going to have a lot of two players where a team with a large roster could have more players that only play one side of the ball. XC you just need 5 skinny dorks that can run through the woods.
IF we're talking T&F, then yes, I'll concede that the big schools would have a very big advantage.
The guy WON the race... finishing times and depth of competetion don't mean anything when measuring greatness. It's all about the win. Therefore, he's a greater runner than any second place finisher in any other state competition ever run.
Fitness is different than skill. Running requires the former, not so much the latter. Stide length and/or rate isn't a skill, dude.
Running is a competition, with a winner determined by head- to-head results based on something physical in nature, therefore a sport.
Wow, a black kid won!!!
How many more people are going to post about whether running is a sport? I'm going to guess 12.
As for the OP, I agree with the guy who said that shoes don't matter as much as people seem to think. I ran my fastest 400 ever wearing wing tips on a bet. Still, that photo gives you the sense that that Chad Hampton has a lot more potential than the average 11th-grader who runs a 17-minute 5K. I predict that you will see him winning some NCAA track meets before all is said and done.
ok, fine....dart, golf, billiard, firemaning, curling and running are all sports....except, they require no athleticism
hope you understand

would you consider a steeplechase as athletic? Since surely running and jumping five 3 foot barriers per lap must show athleticism right? also if a runner, like runners I know, practice martial arts and boxing to get stronger and gain fitness for running does that mean boxing and martial arts is NOT a sport? I think it does by your argument... so now we must add boxing to the not a sport list thanks to you.

Are you retarded you are posting on a web site that's sole purpose is to promote the SPORT of running. How did you even find this site and why are you here. If you don't think its a sport go post that on a basketball site they will probably agree with you. Running is probably the most pure sport in the world. It and wrestling are probably the oldest sports around. Just because people added things like balls and hoops and goal posts to the sport of running doesn't mean that they are any more sporting than the original. Running is a pure contest of athleticism it s you vs all the others and who ever is the best wins. There are no benches to ride, no time outs to rest, no refs to make bad calls and no team mates to blame when you don't win.
the talent pool in the large schools is greater, the odds of a decent kid coming in "off the streets" is also greater. That being said, there are some very good small schools in CT. But if you look at state open championship teams with logevity, it's the bigger schools. this kid running 17:00 in those shoes is a nice run. All you dickheads doing the cough cough thing and thinking along those same lines probably should go out and run a few more miles.
hey needle Dick, it does not mean that i don't like running or think it is not good
thats cute i guess
