Loving this book for some reason. It's like a blog from 1 year of his "comeback". My new favorite runner - he was the opposite of Pre - he went for the win: fast, slow, clean or dirty. He claims to consider the Olympics as just another race (of course he was injured-out or boycotted out every time except his first when he was 19). |

Gosh, I think that I read that book about thirty years ago. Another excellent book -- one of my all-time favorite running books -- was "Marty Liquori's Guide for the Elite Runner," by Liquori and John Parker. Both books benefit from Liquori's intelligence, candor, and (at least in "On the Run") somewhat subversive sense of humor. The latter book also benefits from Parker's writing and understanding of the sport. They were a good team. |

I used that book to train on my own in my late 20s, in the mid 80s, when I was married and working fulltime. It kept me going. Got prs of 14:08 5k, 29:37 10k, 105:52 1/2 and 222 marathon from that book, training on my own. I actually wrote Marty a letter asking some question about a workout in the book and he wrote me back. |
