Does anyone have a list of all U.S. performers who have gone sub 29 in the 10,000, and sub 13:50 in the 5,000?
Or if that is too long how about a top 100 all-time U.S. 5,000 and 10,000 meter list.

From this list it is obvious that Rupp is by far the best runner the US has produced in decades.
Uh Meb? Abdi? Ritz? Teg?
"produced" or "hatched" by Nike
So the question is...
Which is more impressive:
Steve Prefontaine's 27:43 10k from 1974
or
Marty Liquori's 13:15 from 1977?
Frank Shorter never ran a 10k faster than Pre, and Shorter's 10k PR came 1 year later and 2 seconds slower, a day late and a dollar short.
Marty Liquori ran 13:15 in 1977 and then apparently no American ran sub 13:20 until Rudy Chapa ran 13:19 in 1979. Pretty impressive runs for the 70's crew.
What's also amazing is the fact that until Ritz's breakthrough this summer, the 3 best US-BORN 10k performers in history (Virgin, Salazar, and Nenow) ran their best times about 25-30 years ago. That's a HELL a long time ago. Really incredible.
(and it makes me question the notion of the incredible rebirth of US distance running that is supposedly taking place. Sure some of our young guys like Ritz, Webb, and Teg and Rupp have done some amazing things, and they have some time to do some more, but it still appears to me that we were better, by certain measurement, 25-30 years ago. It's nice that we are getting back towards that level, but due to a certain type of running "inflation" (great improvements on the all time times by East Africans), a 27:20 or 27:30 today just ain't worth what it once was. With that in mind, we WERE better a quarter century ago).
In need of some fact checking

Salazar was born in Cuba. He's an immigrant just like Meb and Abdi. Not sure why that matters, they're all Americans.
for the above lists:
Average of year in which PR was made - 5k '95; 10k '94
Average of year in which mark was made - 5k '93; 10k '94
top 10 individuals PR average yr is 5k '00; 10k '97
Point - the US records books are still HEAVILY skewed to the golden age in the 70s/80s, and BK's 5k running of the 90s.
record progressions:

45 guys have now run a faster 5k than Prefontaine.
The biggest group of them went to Oregon.
Marty Liquori was an interesting guy. One of the first to smartly move up.
He was a bit of a nose in the air dilettante back in the day. I am sure there are some ripe stories of him behind the scenes. Seems like he mellowed into a decent fellow after age took his running career away.

I'm surprised Marc Davis never ran faster than 13:27. Didn't he briefly have the American record in the 2 mile or 3000?
21 of the top 43 sub 28 min performers have taken place within the last decade. The other half were over the previous 3 decades. This proves that there is greater depth in American 10,000 now than ever before.
It is silly to compare the world scene because the Africans did not compete on the World Scale 30 years ago. We can compare Americans today to the previous generations.
Marty did almost no long (800m and longer) intervals. That he could run 13:15 without regularly doing stuff like 6 x 1000 at 5k pace is amazing to me.
