MAINE VOTES DOWN GAY MARRIAGE 11/4/2009 5:22PM Reply | Return to Index | Report Post
This is terrible. I thought Maine was progressive and liberal. Not repressive and ignorant. I was shocked when the proposition to repeal gay marriage was passed. Over 86% of my college campus voted No, so I never thought the rest of the state would have voted yes. Can anyone come up with a reason for not allowing gays to marry, I can not successfully shoot down with evidence?

Tell me, why isn't there an option on the ballot for reinstating the death penalty for fags? That's my position -- if you are a proud practicing fag the death penalty should apply, case closed.

I am gay and honestly I don't care. But at the same time, take out the word "marriage" out of all civil documents and licenses and just give out civil unions licenses to both gays and straights. Heck, if you wanted to have a civil union with your mother or your brother...go for it.

Don't let government define what a marriage is.

While it may be shameful, it is certainly not unamerican, being that the vast majority of americans, including the majority of EVERYONE who has had a chance to vote on it has banned it.

I'm not gay, and I agree very much with the sentiments below. The "gov't" part of marriage today is nothing more than a civil union, anyway. Grant civil unions to everyone, then let the various religions in this country decide whether or not they want to perform same sex marriages and leave it at that.

Every single time this issue has come before voters it's been shot down. At this time 30 states have passed marriage protection acts or something very similar. When will you gays get the point?!

Dear Dumbass,

The term is marriage. For centuries (almost 5000 years) it has been defined as a union between a MAN and a WOMAN. That is the definition. You are imposing your relation, and although you love your mate, the definition stands. Otherwise, next week, I will host a marathon of 26.2km and ask the IAAF to honor and recognize the winning times. If a guy runs 1:50 I will declare that he is the new Marathon world record holder. Screw Geb. Imagine the outpouring (probably even from you) that this is not right because a marathon is 26.2 MILES as the definition reads.

Sincerely,

Daniel Webster

The voters should have spoken on this in the first place. The courts are not the place for legislative priviledge to occur. This is the case for gay marriage, abortion, and a host of agenda-driven ideologies.

The voters do not want gay marriage! you cannot argue "successfully" against the outcome of the vote. it is what it is. If the vote had won, you probably would have been pissed off if it was challenged by the opposing view in court (which I expect the gay view supporters to do). So it is usually a case of "If I dont get my way then I'll try again and again and again until I do get my way." Then I'll say..."THE VOTERS HAVE SPOKEN".

Very Inconsistent, no?

Anyway, the answer to your question (which you will disagree with even though it is accurate) is the following:

There is no discrimination!!! ANY man can marry a woman, and ANY woman can marry a man. There is no discrimination! Gay men can marry a woman JUST LIKE a straight man. and a gay woman can marry a man JUST LIKE a straight woman. No discrimination! Society has DECIDED to see marriage as an event (contract, covenant, committment, whatever) between a man and a woman. end of story. What is being attempted is the changing of the word 'marriage' to include pairings of individuals that havent been included in the definition before. but the definition of marriage IS between a man and a woman.

There you have it. Dont hate me because I disagree with you. I dont hate you because you disagree with me. I just simply disagree with you...and so do the majority of the voting public who have the right to self governance.

That's great. Kind of like when most people thought slavery was cool.

i know this may be too complex for you, but most thinking people would be fine if you called it a "civil union."

this term hasn't been defined for 5,000 years, so maybe you'd be ok with it? Or is the length of the tradition only relevant when it helps your little arguments?
