Are we producing Marshmallows???

Yes we are.

Kids are lazier.

Parents are more protective.

= kids are more protected and wimpier.

Many parents are even asking schools to drop the football programs.

I guess we are producing marshmallows.

I think it's because the kids are in danger of getting run over by people in a hurry to get to work. The school doesn't want them walking along a busy street or crossing streets to get to a bus stop. The parents waiting in the car are probably on their way to work and are just waiting to hit the road. This isn't what's making American kids fat. It's the internet, xbox, tv, and non-stop snacking. Econo-sized tubs of food from Sams Club or Costco with no supervision. Plus it's easier to pick up a couple Happy Meals than to cook a real dinner. But it's certainly not the school bus run that's making them marshmallowy.

I'd bet a million bucks that these were kindergarten kids. 5 or 6 year old tykes who have no business walking 1/2 mile or so - alone - to their bustops, across busy streets, or in front of your maniacal driving. I'm sure the high school kids are walking, dude. Middle School too.

I have no issue with kids being picked up by the bus, too many kids get kidnapped, killed by maniacal drivers like yourself. I can see you sitting behind the bus gunning your engine and fuming with smoke. I sure wouldn't want my kid walking along the shoulder with you driving by.

My kids are not fat, they exercise all the time. It is the parents who are at fault. Kill your video game systems and do away with cable. Buy your kids outdoor sporting equipment and they will be fine.

No kids on my street are fat, and they all play outside. Our biggest worry is people like you. Last year, wee had a kid killed by someone trying to put on their blazer while driving 20 mph over the limit down a residential street. Apparently he was cutting through our neighborhood to avoid the main roads.

This is ridiculous. When I was a school boy I had to walk over three miles to school uphill, both ways, in the rain. This is why there are so many young hulligans in my neighborhood.

in the city we're raising marshmallows just like always. Out in the country, they're ain't no marshmallows. cities allow people (not just kids, all people) to become marshmallows.

The kids were obviously in the local jr high, since that's where the bus turned, and thekids were mostly around 5 ft tall. Pretty tall for kindergarten huh? Apology not necessary. I wouldn't believe you anyway.

....oh , and by the way, I don't speed. Never have. In fact, I am considered a very safe driver according to my car insurance.

Oohhh, luxury...absolute luxury. We dreamed of 3 miles of hills & rain. When I was a lad we had to cross a mountain pass (both ways) that would have turned back the Donner Party. After school we had to work down coalmine for tuppence ha' penny a day.

And still be expected to run a 15 minute 5k, even with the black lung disease.

thats nothin, i used to have to walk barefoot 6 miles to school both ways in a foot of snow carrying a heavy potato sack of books and an old mushy apple for lunch. damn kids are lucky today

I don't think it has to do with politics. Parents are just incredibly overprotective and controlling nowadays. In the suburbs here, I don't think you will find anything but conservatives. I used to walk with my kid and the dog about 1.5 miles through the neighborhood to elementary school. We would hit a line of a hundred cars waiting to drop their kids off at the door. One crazy lady was the second house from the school, so maybe 50 meters from school property. We'd see them pack into their car, and drive away from school to get in the drop-off line a half mile down the street, then wait, and wait. That's your typical American parent, my friend.

Ya know, it's interesting. There is all this overprotectiveness going on, while at the same time public school systems now have absurd rules give kids suspensions, expulsions, and criminal records for harmless infractions. Those seem like two currents running in opposite directions with opposite sets of consequences, but heck, what do I know?

A classmate in my master's program told us about a study that he did about kids commuting to school. He discovered that when kids were harmed on the way to school, it was most often because they were hit by a car driven by a parent on the way to the same school. Ironically, the parents who have to drive their kid to school because walking isn't safe are the very reason that it is dangerous.
