I have been watching the World Series and expect to see the best of the best elite ball players vying for the championship of the world. Highly paid, highly trained skilled professionals. But why so many fat players. OK Sabathia must be a superstar but he is a hog. But he's not the only one. Look at Swisher, Pettitte, Blanton, Pedro, Moline and others. The most cut guy is the 45 yr. old manager Joe Girardi! What gives? |

Baseball is not a sport. It is an activity which requires certain skills. |

Here we go again. How about running? By your logic, it can NOT be a sport because it's an activity which requires certain skills too. |

You're right...my earlier post should read: "Baseball is not a sport. It is an activity which requires certain skills, and no athleticism." |

Yeah, no athleticism. I'd love to see your 6'0 140 frame make a diving catch in the gap or have the strength to hit the ball 450 feet. Runners are a joke. Always criticizing other sports but not realizing theirs requires the least amount of athleticism of any sport out there. |

Here we go again. How about running? By your logic, it can NOT be a sport because it's an activity which requires certain skills too.[/quote] but to play baseball and be successful at any level, you need more relative skill to that sport. however with running, it is more about hardwork and endurance of pain. how hard is it to hit a 90 mile per hour fastball? very, very hard. how hard is it to run a 4:00 mile or 13:xx 5k? very, very hard. however, how much pain is involved in hitting the fastball? none really, it's an acquired skill. running 13:xx 5k, (or even 16:xx 5k for some people) comes also from much practice, but anyone who has ever run 13's for a 5k will tell you a lot of pain is involved while doing it and in the training for it. but the training for hitting a fastball or pitching of whatever it is in baseball doesn't really require a lot of stress on the body, it's more of a skill. running is more about stretching your body to the limit with pain and endurance of that pain. baseball is more about maximizing skills. i dont really think running is a "skill". anyone with 2 working legs can do it. it's just a matter of how far and how fast. a skill is something aquired that only certain people can do after practicing. |

C.C. is not FAT. He is HUSKY. He is the best pitcher in baseball. He will be the only 300 game winner from this era. He would have had at least 15 more wins if he had played for a good hitting team the 3 years before this year but cleveland gave him very little run support most of the time. As far as I can remember, Sabathia has never had any arm trouble. The only time he has been injured is straining a rib muscle a couple times at the beginning of a season. |

Just for the heck of it I used the NiH website BMI calculator http://www.nhlbisupport.com/bmi/ to get the BMI of each active player on the 25-man NEW YORK YANKEES roster... Active Roster Pitchers B/T Ht Wt DOB 91 Alfredo Aceves R/R 6-3 220 12/08/82 BMI of 27.5 99 Brian Bruney R/R 6-3 235 02/17/82 BMI of 29.4 34 A.J. Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera, and Ramiro Pena are the ONLY three players who fall in the "NORMAL" range (<25) Of course, limitation of BMI is it doesn't take into account muscle, but BMI is still a good general guide for most, and I worry that with guys in the 30+ range as major leaguers NOW, they won't be much better in retirement. |

BMI does not work at all for professional athletes. You can tell by looking at most of those guys that they aren't overweight at all. Do you truly think that A-Rod is nearly obese? Those numbers are almost meaningless. |

I agree that BMI is misleading. I do not think A-Rod is nearly obese...he's pretty ripped, I believe. However, how can someone look at CC and say he isn't plain-old fat? Yes, he probably has a lot of muscle as well (plus, he's really tall), but there be plenty 'o lard on him. Prince Fielder, too. |

A-Rod is jacked all around, that BMI figure means nothing. |

Possessing the necessary neurological wiring to hit major league pitching is a very rare attribute. If you have that, and not much else, you can be a ballplayer. If you don't, all the athleticism in the world won't make a difference - see Michael Jordan, who failed at AA ball. People who can both hit big league pitching, and be athletic enough to succeed in another sport, like Bo Jackson and Deion Sanders, are truly extraordinary. |

is that it's ridiculous and especially ridiculous when applied to athletes. in '04 or '05, there was a study that according BMI, something like 70% of NBA players were "obese." false. the problem w/ BMI is that you can't be jacked and have it come out well for you. if you're a ripped body builder, your BMI is going to suck. http://nbcsports.msnbc.com/id/7129586// |

Exactly. Look at Brett Gardner... 11 Brett Gardner L/L 5-10 185 08/24/83 BMI of 26.5 26 BMI!? Yeah right... thats like saying tyson gay has a bmi 25+ because of his height and weight combo. That kind of BMI study only works when you aren't talking about athletes. |

"That kind of BMI study only works when you aren't talking about athletes." Exactly. And baseball players aren't athletes. |
