Well I haven't posted on here in years but today REALLY pissed me off and I need to vent. I was 2.5 miles into an 8 miler when 2 PBs broke through a wire fence barking...I looked at them but didn't think they would come down the steep 7-8ft tall ditch wall crawl up the other side and after me....wrong. I was running on the side of a double lane with a median in between highway. Most of us have fought off one dog but two is a big issue. They began to lunge and as I was swinging they backed off circled and lunged again...each time backing off less. I knew they would eventually get ahold of me. I saw no traffic so I ran into the HW and they followed. I fought them off crossing the median and onto the other side. No traffic. Finally the bigger one got ahold of my jacket scrtaching my arm. I swung and I think I barely hit it in the head/face. As soon as he let go the other lunged and I swung I think hitting it. So I finally was able to see the traffic released from a light coming this way and my only option was to jump into the traffic hoping they would stop and the dogs would not follow. (this is a HW through town 55mph.) The traffic stopped but the dogs followed. I kept jumping around swinging and yelling when I thought to jump up on a hood of a car...BUT then I thought they would sue if I dented the hood?? Swung a couple of more times and spotted a lady in a truck motioning to get in....I ran and the door was locked....just then the dogs took off, scaled the ditch wall and back into their yard. The police were called...I didn't know but I ran to the city hall and had them call the police. Well I rode in the back of the car to show the officer where the dogs were and the people were cited 2-300 bucks. I DON'T FEEL GOOD! Most of us have fought off dogs before so we know how to do it better than the average person right? I teach MMA so I think I have a good grasp on how to fight off "A" dog...2 was a new issue. I have the feeling that if I were a normal person I would have been shredded and these people would have been seriously ticketed/arrested/dogs taken?? So I have the feeling like they essentially took advantage of my MMA training to only get a 2-300 fine and 10 days of house arrest for the dogs. I got a nice rip in my wind breaker and a tooth scratch on my arm. I just settled out of court for 3000$ for a german shepard attack in May of THIS YEAR! These people lived in a ghetto and the chance of them having homeowners insurance (which covered the other dog bite) to pay for jacket, hospital bill to have them look at my arm is nil. I am a Doc candidate...not an MD but in the medical field. So I know there is no issue with my arm but still... Fu##ing dogs piss me off. Not all dogs just the ones raised by STUPID humans. Well I've vented...your thoughts? |

You have given a high knee to the first dog and slammed him back into the cage of the Octagon err umm highway. Then you could have put the other dog to 'sleep' in a triangle choke! |

Funny you mention it...If ONE dog is on your arm its easy to pull guard / attempt a TC. I honestly would not be so pissed off if it were one dog...as for most of us it would just be another day. MAN I am realy mad...I am going for a walk to try and cool off. |

So you teach mixed martial arts, but you basically ran from the dogs? That was your first mistake. Your attitude needs adjusting. You want those dogs to attack you. You NEED those dogs to attack you. They will attack. And you will kill them. When they attack, fight dirty. Fight like a rabid-ass chimpanzee. Get them in headlocks, break their legs, dig their eyes out, wrench their testicles til they tear off. When the thing is down and immobile due to four broken legs, grab a big, jagged slab of concrete and drop it on its head. You don't owe it mercy. It sure as hell wouldn't give you any. When the dogs are dead, THEN start running. Haul ass actually. I wouldn't take that route for a while either. You know what to do next time. |

i agree about the fact that stupid people shouldn't raise dogs. same thing applies to raising children, but there are so many stupid people on the planet, i understand now what crick meant when he said stupidity is a gene that spreads. there should be a test for it(raising dogs & children), especially for attaining dangerous dogs. if i were one of those drivers on the freeway i would've done you a favor and not stop for the dogs. i sympathize more with the dogs than the owners. if i were you, i wouldn't feel bad about the owners getting a $200-300 fine. i think they should put down one of the dogs and make the owner(s) attend a mandatory 8-hour saturday school for how to raise dogs responsibly. |

Similar story happened to me, though they were not two pit bulls (just two big mutts, big difference) but the annoying thing was the owner was just down the street talking to his neighbor, and saw the whole thing and DID NOTHING!!!!!! I eventually fought the dogs off after hitting them in the face (like you and most runners dogs are nothing new and growing up with a big dog taught me how to fight them). Anyway, after wards I was fuming, have never been so mad in my life. I turned around and ran 100m or so to the dogs owner who was just chatting with a man on the street and I told him if his dogs ever came after me again I would break their neck right then and there and if he did not believe me have them out at 2:00pm the next day. Never saw the dogs again. And I was serious, if the things ever come after me again at least one will die. I would not worry about the $200 dollar fine. If they can't pay it then they don't need to have dogs. You had every right to kill the dogs right there as soon as it started attacking you. Just tell the jack*** owners they are lucky they still have the dogs and next time they won't be so lucky. |

Dude, you need to look into getting some shots. I know you are a Doc candidate, so you probably already know this... If someone is too lazy to properly secure two killer dogs, I doubt they spent the time/money to make sure these things are properly immunized, vaccinated, etc. Think of all the rabid shit those dogs probably chase in the yard. I would at least look into having the dogs tested. To make you feel better, I was on a paved trail between my city and a local lake - about 7 miles long. I was finishing an 18 mile run, so I was pretty exhausted. I rounded a corner to find myself alone, facing three dogs. Two Pitbulls and one German Shepherd. No owner in site, just a pack of mean ass dogs that had obviously escaped from someone's house. To my immediate right was a small stream that had a high, chain-link fence with barbed wire at the top (Other side is some sort of quarry). On my left was a very steep forest hill leading up about 100 meters to a fairly bad neighborhood. These dogs had obviously come from that neighborhood. Anyway, I stopped in my tracks. I just stood still. They started growling and I just closed my eyes and got into the fetal position VERY slowly. I felt them come up and sniff me, still growling. I didn't move. Finally they just walked away. Honestly, i normally act very aggressively towards a dog if it attacks and usually it goes away. This was three big dogs, and I knew I didn't stand a chance, so I gave up and luckily it worked. I was scared shitless though. Called the cops when I got home and they basically told me to call the pound. No one cared. If those things would have found a kid, it would have been dinner time. F***ing idiots and their dogs. They need to throw the book at these people. For the record, I own two labs. I don't hate dogs, just people who buy killers and have no idea what to do with them. |

Two pitbills attacked my dog while being walked by my wife. Luckily some passerby swung a bat and scared them away, leaving my dog bloodied and injured. Both pitbulls were confiscated by the city and euthanized. Why don't you check with your city attorney, as the police might need someone to light a fire under their asses to do their job correctly? It worked in my case. |

Not sure if your serious but I'll explain. 1st I was already running so they saw me as prey. 2nd...2 dogs....thats the biggest issue. 3rd 1 was the male father the younger one seemed to follow suit. 4th I tested their boundries...Most dogs won't leave their yard, next they entered the road, next they crossed the median, next they crossed a second road, when it finally ended they were 300m or so from their house...These dogs did not care about territory. They engaged me approximately...50m from their house...After a few swings I was able to run a few steps up to 10m before they caught me. Most dogs will back off after a certain distance from their yard. Although there were only 2 they had a pack mentality. They took turns lunging/ or I was spinning to engage the other one so they would not attack from side/behind. However I had the mentality if I took time to focus on one the other will latch on and its over so I only got the semi hard hitto the head and maybe 2 grazes one with hand one with foot. Remember that PBs are much smaller than most dogs. Also if they get an arm you can still run but a leg and it may be over forever...So I was focused on saving an ankle. I know typing this much about a 1-2min ordeal is probably not warrented but... As for the individual who asked about Bjj...I have 4 years of sub grappling and roll with regular jj guys...I have limited gi work though. 10 years of Judo/akido/akijujitsu/hapkido from various dojos for clinch/TD work. maybe 5-6 years of Korean T/Karate, 1 year of boxing. Am considering some of the area organizations to jump in for a fight or two...however I still limitedly train myself because of the physical conflict with running MMA has. I teach mainly technique and the basics (postural control, submissions, sweeps etc...) of SG/Bjj. But I don't want to turn this into a distance runner MMA fighter thread (although I have often wondered why more distance runners don't compete?) I just wanted to bitch about dogs. Strangely I am feeling much more calm after talking about this...thanks guys/gals |

Pitbulls are a different deal than most dogs, but I've had success with stepping menacingly at an approaching barking dog and yelling "HEY!" at them as loud as possible. I had to do that recently as I was on a run with both of my kids when two dogs ran around the side of a house from the back yard and were VERY close to biting us when I stepped toward them and yelled. The woman owner and her teenage son came out and got the dogs...offering no apology of course, so I told her that that was "unacceptable" and to "keep control of your dogs". I agree with the other poster about breaking the dog's leg. If the thing is going to latch on, the best thing to do is stay calm, let it latch on (more damage if you try to pull away as it either rips then or clamps down on another spot) and then break one of its legs with your other hand or step on it if possible. An attacking dog deserves NO mercy at all. And I'm a dog lover. |

Thanks for the story "dog lover"...Also Sarcastro...IF they would have mangled an arm or any body part...yes they would be put down...but since they didn't they are technically not dangerous until proven otherwise...Sounds like crap to me but thats why you got the judgement. A ripped sleeve and scratch are not enough to be put down dogs. Around here a non dangerous dog goes on house arrest (like they aren't always on house arrest) for 10 days and then the animal control revisits and if noone else has been attacked they are cleared. As for shots I just had them not too long ago (MAY) and the people actually did have papers on shots for their dogs and they were clean. Combined with the sure thought that I would NOT get any $$ for getting more shots just in case I will skip the visit that would cost 400-600$ Anyway anger is going away...thanks for talking about this everyone and GL on the roads! |

With 2 dogs nothing else you could have really done. I'd say you were actually successful just coming out of that without really serious injuries or worse. Kind of like 2 on 1 in an MMA match, wouldn't like your chances. |

Obviously the owners are at fault, but at the same time, it's not a smart idea to run through a poor/bad neighborhood. Much higher chance of a dog attack or a human attack. Hopefully the law does something about the dogs. |

They came from a poor neighborhood...on the other side of a fence and onto the highway. But thats also like saying poor people don't control their dogs. The police said the people (Gbanger looking) appeared to be sorry...they said they didn't know their dogs were outside. 2 on 1....I've never felt helpless against 1 dog...just pissed they were interrupting my run. With this all I could think of was the easiest way out with no/minimal damage. Of course it sucks since it was on one of may fav routes I've ran for 5 years and now? Wehn you like in a town of 50k there aren't many other places to run. |

I was doing a night run and a part of my route is this 600-800m stretch of road with no lights,a side road. This car passed me, stopped about 200m ahead of me. When I was approaching the car I saw 3 dogs get out and start running around...I stopped, then one of the dogs saw me. We both stood still, then it started growling (about 15m away). It took off towards me but I stood my ground and lunged at it and yelling. It jumped back. But once the other dogs heard me they took off like a bat out of hell at me and it prompted the other one to run at me also. These were 3 very big dogs. I would have felt comfortable with 1, but not 3. I would have stood my ground, but not with 3 dogs and having them already charging me, I ran. I took my chance and ran faster than I ever had in my life. I had a slight downhill and somehow I ran long/fast enough to where they lost interest me in me and stopped chasing me after 400m or so. I got extremely lucky and took my chance, and it paid off. |
