places to run in tokyo? 11/3/2009 9:21AM Reply | Return to Index | Report Post
I will be in tokyo for a few days for business. Never been there before. Where can I run there??? I need to do some 800m intervals and a 15miler and I really don't want to do them on the hotel treadmill.

I will be at the grand hyatt. Please please please let me know of convenient places nearby to run.
Thanks!

I'm not sure where the Grand Hyatt is. When I was there, I ran along the Sumida river, but it's more common to run at the Imperial Palace or at one of the major parks (Yoyogi is one I remember). The parks are fairly big and you can run loops. The Imperial Palace is the same.

I take it you will be in the Shibuya area? If so there is a track right next to Yoyogi Park. The track from my understanding is open only Monday evenings, but the fence around it did not seem insurmountable, so you should be able to jump over it. Having said that I have no idea as to the rules for the use of it.

Yoyogi Park is good for some loops but to get 15 miles in you would need to head toward the river which is above Shinjuku. You could also run from your hotel to the Imperial Palace grounds and run several laps there.

Whatever you do take a map. Tokyo is a maze of roads - London is comparable, but in London you can read the street signs and in a pinch ask someone for directions. In Tokyo you won't be so fortunate.

For a HUGE city Tokyo is relatively easy to run in, but get out early on the weekends to avoid the crowds and be ready for some long waits to cross busy roads.

The imperial palace is actually quite nice, you could do worse than running laps around it.

I wandered all around Tokyo with and without a map and never got truly lost. There are plenty of landmarks, and the street names are written in the latin alphabet.
What can I run

God I miss Tokyo. Wonderful, fun city.

And yeah, I think you should run along the river. Thats what I did. I also stayed in Asakusa, and you can run along the river there. It's marked every ~200 meters
