Okay, I sat across the table from Meb at a Denny's near the track in Sacramento at the 2000 OTs. This guy is as American as any of you losers. I don't think anyone is debating that. He is a good guy, an honest guy, a smart-as-hell guy and a true American citizen. The thing is, people for a long time have wanted to see an American-born, corn-fed, blonde haired, country boy like Pre come in and do some bang-up championship racing. Is that racist? I don't know, maybe, maybe not. The fact that Meb comes from a powerhouse running background genetically takes some of the luster off of his citizenship. There is an asterisk there, like it or not. People want to see people who look like themselves do well. I am not sure this is so bad. I would love to see some skinny white guy from my home state go and and dominate the NBA. Not because I hate tall African-American men, but because it is funny and awesome to see someone who looks like me do something so many would think was impossible. Sure, I am still happy if the 7'4" African-American kid from the other side of town does it, but it is not the same. Why? Because it is nothing new. It is not novel. He is expected to do that. Is that racist, I don't really think so. In the end, we should all be stoked about Meb, I know that I am. He is a great guy and a tremendous athlete. He is also a ridiculous asset to our great country. |

A well thought out argument. He is an American, and he has won the race. It is legit. The issue regarding people wanting a home-town boy to win should not be mixed up with his legitimacy as an American. They are two separate issues. From what you wrote, i think you agree with me. |

Yes, an American won the NYC marathon, period. Conflating the term American with white and non-immigrant is exactly what is at issue. The people doing so know very well what they are saying. |

You are probably right, although I'd like to thin otherwise. Crazy that the issue made a major news publication though, even as an editorial. And yes, to be clear, I DO consider Meb an American, and I consider him to be more American than many people born here. That said, I understand the desire to see someone born here win a major race. I believe those are two mutually exclusive things though, not to be conflated... |

No one likes Meb, he screamed RACISM wayyyyyyyyyy to fast. Who on Letsrun isn't picked on? Geezes read some of the things said about Jordan Hasay, or Ali Mclaughlin on here.... Never heard anyone from German Fernandez's camp cry about Racism and the things said about him were wayyyyyyyyyy worse than Meb. |
| What!!! |

"He screamed racism wayyyyyy too fast" Are you retarded? Have you not read some of these posts?? White people deny racism wayyyyyyyyyyyy too fast. What wiil it take for you too see that racism is alive and well in the USA. |

If you knew how many racial insults Jeremy Wariner had directed his way by blacks. I never heard him whine once. Then a ton of whites started questioning his race when he started throwing down ridiculous times. I never heard him whine once about it. Meb gets all bent out of shape because some people are like, 'hoo humm another African born runner wins a marathon'. Then starts going to the media. Pathetic. Wariner is an arrogant prick, but at least he isn't a cry baby like meb. |
| What!!! |

I havent heard or read one Black person say anything bad about Wariner. So Meb should be OK with the ignorant, inbred, redneck racist idiots questioning his Americanism?? I can understand white people wanting to see another white boy win a race they dont normally win. Thats not racist. Black people were happy to see Tiger Woods do well. White people on this site and others have gone a lot further. To say that Meb should shut up and ignore it is wrong. In my opinion, white people should stop being crybabies. If you are tired of people of African descent winning all the distance events, then TRAIN HARDER. |
