US 1 Mile Run Progression 11/3/2009 4:30AM Reply | Return to Index | Report Post
I'm looking to do a research paper on "are Americans getting faster". I've pulled the number of 1st time 4 min milers each year since 57 but was hoping someone could point me to the US progression (world records aren't hard to find but we haven't had many of those since Jim Ryun) of the 1 mile run.

Many thanks,
Michael

Looks like you want someone ELSE to do the research for your research paper.

My best guess:
4:00.5 Wes Santee (1955)
3:58.7 Don Bowden (6/1/57)
3:58.6 Dyrol Burleson (4/23/60)
3:58.0 Jim Beatty (5/28/60)
3:55.5 Jim Beatty (6/7/63)
3:55.4 Jim Grelle (6/15/65)
3:55.3 Jim Ryun (San Diego 6/27/65)
3:53.7 Jim Ryun (Los Angeles 6/4/66)
3:51.3 Jim Ryun (Berkeley 7/17/66)
3:51.1 Jim Ryun (Bakersfield 6/23/67)
3:51.11 Steve Scott (Oslo 7/17/79)
3:49.68 Steve Scott (Oslo 7/11/81)
3:48.83 Sydney Maree (Rieti 9/9/81)
3:48.53 Steve Scott (Oslo 6/26/82)
3:47.69 Steve Scott (Oslo 7/7/82)
3:46.91 Alan Webb (Brasschaat 7/21/07)

Beatty may have set more records, but I didn't want to spend a lot of time on it. Everything sub 3:55 should be correct, as I got it from pela's lists. Before that may have mistakes.

One correction on that progression. I sure someone will correct me if I am wrong, but I don't think Maree was a US citizen yet in 81 so he could not have set the AR even though he ran faster than the AR at that time. I don't think Maree became a US citizen until 82 or 83. Can anyone advise?

Good catch. Pela's lists have him as USA, but I don't think he was eligible for US records at that time. A link on USATF showed him as Villanova/RSA. I guess if he was South African at that point, he couldn't have run in races outside of South Africa. Interesting.

Although this list of sub-4 US milers from TFN lists his Rieti run as his first sub-4 as representing the US. Maybe someone more knowledgeable will weigh in.

Scouring the TFN boards, dj gives this info:

Maree received U.S. citizenship early in 1984. However, as a South African citizen who had begun U.S. naturalization, the IAAF allowed him to compete for the U.S. in 1981 at the World Cup. That understanding was in place before the '81 TAC meet took place, but I don't know how much earlier the IAAF action occurred.
