my gym is run very strangely 11/3/2009 2:30AM Reply | Return to Index | Report Post
Just asking for thoughts on this. I joined up to a gym recently to supplement my training. First of all they required a doctor's note to be able to train there. Secondly, the induction was insanely long (2 hours) with a lot of tests like peak flow, body fat percentage (which I think was probably inaccurate as it was done by a hand held monitor that looked ancient and also nothing was mentioned about eating or drinking before). Then there was a 4 page questionnaire about things and my goals and so on. So far, not too insane, but then I discovered to use the gym you have to use an electronic tag and the machines won't work without it. On top of this you have to log in and log out each time for which there are long queues, and if you skip the queue the machines don't work.

They program your tag to allow you to use certain machines on certain reps. If you go over the reps the machine screams at you that you've done too much but if you don't do what they recommend you get a report saying you haven't done the work you were meant to.

They have to program the machines into your tag that you are allowed to use, and if you want to use any others you can't, until you get permission and they then program those in.

Anyway, I think it's a bit over the top and have decided to leave the gym, as I want one where you can just go in and use the machines and do what you want!

Surely you could have found all of this out before you joined......

Listen, I have dealt with this kind of thing before. I guess some people need this, I don't know.

I tired to join a gym down the street from my office and it was such a freaking process, i just decided not to. I went in to join, and basically told the guy i was going to be running outside, and just needed a place to shower and lift on occasion.

He dove into this seminar on how I needed to supplement my running with other kinds of cardio, and how it was horrible to run everyday. I was getting "nothing" from my running, exercise only works if you "confuse" the muscles. This was coming from a chubby guy that could barely speak the English language (meaning his grammar was poor, not that he predominately spoke another language). I should have told him that I was a former D1 athlete with a masters in physiology, but that would have been a dick move.

Finally I just told him that I would come back later and left. I joined another, smaller gym instead. It is more expensive and a little further away, but I just cannot deal with those types of places. He still calls me like every other month.

This sounds like a great gym in all honostly.

Its keeping the over-doers and the ignorant from hurting themselfs all the while directing attention to the appropriate mechanisms involved with resistance traning.

That being said I wouldnt be caught dead there.

Pull up bar. 20's 30's 40's 50's 60's. Kettle Bell. Punching Bag. Flat bench. and padded matt and your done man.

Everyone rags on trainers but all you need is listed above and you could be more fit then ever before

Yeah, but what if you don't care about that? My point was that I wanted a place to shower after I run, and somewhere to do pullups, situps and weights a few days a week. I don't care about trainers, muscle confusion and being jacked. I am a runner.

"F". Poor grammar and proper usage of english syntax is strongly recommended.

Why did you join this gym?

Don't use too many machines. Stick to pullups, dumbbells, barbells, multi-grip swiss bars, fat bars, cables, etc.

People don't need a machine to tell them how many reps/sets to do or how much weight to use. People need to learn how to read their bodies.

If the OP actually joined the gym, good luck getting out of the contract unless there was a specific clause as to opting out within a certain time-frame.

Same here. I took a two year full layoff due to having kids and starting a new job. I joined a gym and got a total hard sell on personal training, nutrition plans, you name it. The whole idea was to sell, sell, sell.

I told the "trainer" that I was fine without it. He took this snitty attitude like I was never going to get fit, or even be motivated enough to come to the gym if I didn't do what he said.

A year later I had lost 23 pounds, increased my strength significantly and gone to the gym 5 days a week. I knew every one there and loved seeing, but ignoring, that guy every day as I joked around with his co-workers.

I've found out I can write to them and cancel giving 30 days notice, so this is what I'm going to do.

My favorite are the 70 year old dudes who sit bare ass down on the bench in the steamrooms/locker rooms/etc.
OMG, disgusting. I realize they clean the place daily, but OMG. disgusting!

Honestly, that gym sounds like a great research tool. Here they have stats on everyone along with four pages of info and all the info from the machines they use.

j/k

I wouldn't join there. Even if I trusted a trainer, I just don't want the hassle most of the time. The gym is a supplement and/or a plan b, and I like being able to duck in and out with the minimum of fuss.
