droping mile time 11/2/2009 5:19PM Reply | Return to Index | Report Post
Is it possible to drop my mile time this year? I am a junior in college.
I ran 1:58 for 800 and 4:02 for 1500 last year,
this year for cross has gone alot better than last. I am fitter and have a significant improvement in my endurance and strength. I was running an average of 60's last year and low 70 peak during base in cross and was 50's and 60's during track. This year I peaked out at 83 and felt great. I averaged 80 in base and tempo phase and am curently running low 70's during interval training. I ran 25:42 for 8k race this year. Last year I ran 26:44 for 8k in cross and 15:37 in track for 5k.
Is it possible to go 1:55 4:12 indoors and 1:53 3:52 outdoors? I am hoping to go to nationals and get all-american in D3.
Please tell me if you think this is possible or what you think I will run for 800, mile, and 1500.

Junior in college and you dont know that their are two "p's" in dropping?

And that "alot" is two words? "A lot"?

Maybe on those 80 mile weeks, you can run some grammer lessons threw your head.

You should demand a refund from youre college.

I could see going 4:15 indoors, 3:56-7 outdoors. It's more likely that you'll see a huge drop in your 1500 and 5000m times than you will in your 800. Your 800 might only be a 1:56 or so, and that's still a nice jump.

I don't mean to be a downer, but to expect a 5 second and 10 second pr in the 800 and 1500 seems a bit much just based on mileage and 8k times alone.

here is advice:

you do not need advice or reassurance from a message board
and you will only truly be able to do it if you think you can its not out of the question.

also more background needs to be known like how much progress have you made in your time up to this point and has your focus always been on the 8/15

I have also run 24 for 200m in a workout and a :52 400m.
We do 6x200m on the minute after long runs and some regular runs. To do this you run a 200 and when you finish you let the clock run to 1min for rest then start another. You do this until you reach 6. We are supposed to do these in 30-35s. Last year I could hit 32-34 for them. This year I roll off 30s and 31s no problem. I think I could do 13-16 of these at 29 or 30 for a workout.

Sorry about the grammer. I didn't proof read it and I must have messed up typing.

It's certainly possible to make big improvements, but 10 seconds in the 1500m is huge.

I hate to break it to you buddy, but 3:52 might not even qualify you for D3 nationals, little less become an all-american, and that's even IF you drop 10 seconds in a single season. If you can only run a 1:58 now, how are you going to magically be able to kick the last 800m (at nationals) within 2-3 seconds of your 800m PR from the previous year?

Focus on just being the best you can be, and if it takes you where you want to go, so be it.

I should also mention I was training for 3k steeple and 5k
when I ran 1:58 and 4:02. I had no real mile/800 work in.
Also they were time trials run by myself.

Just tell me what you think I can run this year for 800 1500/mile.

Running down from that kind of training is typically much more indicative than you might have been led to believe. If you race a bit more, you are obviously going to drop some time... but trust me when I tell you it is extraordinarily rare to go from not being sub 4, to being a 4:12 guy making Nationals. And if you want to make nationals, you better damn well understand it is easier in indoor rather than outdoor (for a distance guy like you, where in outdoor it would likely take 3:51)

Are you trying to say all of your PRs are from time trials? What makes you think you are going to become an all-american by time trialing?

no i think he is saying just 800/1500 are from time trials. it sounds like you didnt even run the 800 or 1500 more than once. it is not unheard of for someone to drop that much time, especially since you didnt really train for the 800/1500 last year. like said above, the only that needs to know they can do it is yourself. believe in yourself man.

on another note it is impossible to tell if the people telling you advice should even be telling you advice at all. for all we know they could have slower prs than you.

"grammar"

"through"

"you're"

And no, I don't think you did that on purpose.

Maybe next time you can just answer his question. Remember, if you don't have anything nice to say...
