Meb's on Letterman tonight 11/2/2009 4:52PM Reply | Return to Index | Report Post
Went to the taping this afternoon here in NYC. Dave brought out Meb to do the top 10 list (marathon-related and not bad) and asked him a few questions, also spent a good part of his monologue riffing on the race. Poor Meb looked like a deer in the headlights though, you can tell he's not used to being in the spotlight. Was a pleasant surprise though, all most people around here seem to care about is Yankees Yankees Yankees.

Dave's also got the right attitude when it comes to racing - at one point (either in his audience meet-n-greet beforehand or during the monologue, I forget) he said: "next year, if you see some idiot out there in a costume running backwards, just trip him."

You're such a c***. Meb has been here forever. He graduated high school here; He went to college here. Get off his dick. If you don't like that America accepts immigrants like we have since our existence then go the f*** to Mexico because we all know no one willingly moves there with the few exceptions of retirees.

Meb has only been an American citizen since 1998 (I think), and considering he's in his early/mid 30s, I'd say it's fair to criticize him a little for not being "American"(in quotes because I don't mean in the literal sense). He waited a hell of a long time to get citizenship(correct me if the process takes 8-10 years, considering he was here about that long).

Nonetheless, he IS American. I'm just pointing out that I can see where others are coming from with their comments.

Personally, I'm thrilled he won NYC.

Our parents have an enormous influence over the people we become. The children of immigrants, not matter how adapted they appear, are different. Not very noticeably, but different - they do not speak or behave like non-immigrants.

A TV camera shoved in your face only amplifies this.

Meb is an American success story.

Meb has come to the US. Been educated here. Educated his family, and further more, loves his country. This was evidenced with him showing his allegiance in the final stages of the race. He is more proud to be an American than 90% of most who were born here and got their citizenship for nothing.

Great for him.

The ONLY thing wrong with the reports about him, he was not born in Eritrea. Eritrea was not a country until 1993.

Would that be about 45% of all who were born here then?

Just giving you a hard time. I agree that he seems extremely proud of his citizenship.

I don't know about Meb's circumstances, but it can easily take more than 10 years to get citizenship - several years to become permanent resident, another 5 years after that before one can apply for citizenship, and then another year or two for the process itself.

That doesn't mean that he wasn't born in Eritrea. Paula Radcliffe was born in England, wasn't she?

Also, how do you define "country"?

Zigzag,

I guess you are one more uneducated person who thinks that Eritrea was a part of Ethiopia. Sir Eritrea was always independent and it was forced to be annexed by Ethiopia with the help of the COUNTRY that MEB is proud to be from today. His village was destroyed by the Ethiopian army, women were raped innocent christian priests were shot to death and you my friend think Eritrea was a part of Ethiopia. I got news for you. You are WRONG! Eritrea was always independent and history does not lie. By logic and if the Brits and the US had it their way, the Nation of Eritrea (pop. 3 million) should not exist. The EPLF independence fighters ought never to have defeated Ethiopia in their 30-year-long struggle. They were outmanned, outgunned, abandoned or betrayed by every ally; their cause was hopeless. Like Meb Kiflezghi and the current Canadian Champion Simon Bairu and half marathon world champion Zeresenay Tadesse, They won by force of character, a unity and determination so steely not all the modern armaments, super power support or economic superiority of Ethiopia could withstand it. The spirit that saw the Eritreans through 10 years in the trenches of their mountain redoubt at Nakfa has built them a strong Nation since independence was finally consummated in 1993. Excellent Post. But didm't Meb's family leave during the fight? How is that a show of unity?

I would have left too, but you make it sound like his family was part of the fight against Ethiopia.

Intended to be a joke. My grandfather was born in Indian Territory before Oklahoma became a state. We used to joke that he was not born in American and thusly, unable to be president.

It does not matter how long he has been an American citizen...even if it were jut an hour ago. He is legally a US citizen and deserves to be treated accordingly. Most athletes in the United States are foreigners anyway. ALL Americans are descendants from foreign countries. What is all this talk about the Meb? We need to wake up let us not go backward. President Obama's election to President of this country should be a wake up call. Blacks have struggled enough in this country and it is about time that we get respected. Where in the American history does Whites have ownership to this country? They are just bunches of thieves who like to take people by force... called RAPE. They raped us scores or years ago and they tend to want to come and do it again, but the eyes of Blacks are opened and it will never happen again. Hurray to American Kerflezighi's win and may he continue to be proud of who he really is despite the White racists that we are forced t live with.
