the Hoosiers choke again in a big race. when are they going to get rid of this joke of a coach and his amateur-hour staff? Weak. |

Helmer was the women's coach at Georgetown. Is anyone surprised that he is failing coaching men? |

Good point. Seemed like an odd hire at the time. Why don't they make an investment in the program and get a good coach? The staff is a bunch of un-proven amateurs too...isn't tom chorney an assistant? |

Helmer took the job in May 2007. 6th in 2005 7th in 2006 5th in 2007 5th in 2008 4th in 2009 |

Did you see the recruiting class he was handed. They should be way better not just this year but last year as well. |

Indeed, Chapman left 5 complete studs for Helmer. Where is Hubers? Why are they so bad in track (8th at Big 10 meet!) |

They're a young team and I think it was a big mistake to not race pre-ncaa. They'll be 2nd easily at the regional on their home course though (only have to beat Butler and they already did that). I think they are in charge of just too many people with it being combined to perform at conference with a whole team, both genders. They have some studs like the high jumper, but they can't spend the time developing walk-ons or small scholarship guys. |

For their might attitude, I think it needs to be pointed out that the men's track team was indeed last in the Big 10 in 09! With their facilities and tradition, it seems someone should be on hot seat immediately. |

This post is just stupid. He had a lot of success with the GT women. Does that guarantee success with men? No, but it's not like he was a failure. You'll have to come up with a better reason than that. By your reasoning Peter Tegen should never have been allowed to coach men. |

Some coaches just work better with one gender over the other. |

What happened to Ben Hubers? I thought this guy would be breaking the 4 minute mile by now. Is he sick, burned out? |

The mens track team was last. Who/how can even the biggest suppirter defend that? It's the same with Purdue's mens cross country team. Warner has been at Purdue for 5 years? Helmer in his 3rd? |
| this is the truth |

No it's not a stupid post. It's the truth. He's a better women's coach because he likes to have that control over them. Notice him hiring a girl right out of college a few years ago. Same goes for Warner at Purdue, hiring a 22 year old with no coaching experience. Control freaks. |

Lets be real though, the Big Ten is by far weaker right now than it was from 2001-2006. You cant compare placing, and look at the 3 years before that, 02-04: 2nd 3rd 4th for IU in a MUCH stronger Big Ten. |

They don't want to spend the money. IU doesn't have football money, and they are paying 3, maybe 4 basketball coaches. They went from 3 head coaches to 1 and got rid of all their experienced assistant coachs, just to save money. |

Helmer makes $120k/year. Ridiculous. The female distance coach (no experience except GA with Helmer the Spring before) graduated from Michigan and the next year was paid $60k/year. Those are outstanding salaries in the Big 10! Add in their top facilities and a budget that dwarfes the vast majority of the Big 10 and there are no excuses they shouldn't be one of the best! |
| salaries notwithstanding |

IU has always been so arogant; Helmer fits in perfectly. People can knock Sam Bell all they want, but he fielded really balanced teams. Helmer is in his retirement job and doing enough with some individuals here and there to justify a couple more years by always promising the future. The distance guys there showed up hoping to be coach by Robert Chapman and are instead doing repeat 300 intervals in October. They have way too much talent to get beat by either OSU or Minnesota. No excuses. |

Funny - when Chapman was there he had them doing 300s for turnover in October too, pretty much every other week. It's one thing to criticize the results but it's pretty arrogant to assess the training from afar. I am sure it wasn't a workout of 300s that did them in - just a bad day. Hardacre in particular looked way off form. |
