With the new show "V" coming out this week, it brings up an interesting question. If Alien life was confirmed, how would the religious fanatics deal with it? Would they realize the bible and their fantasy of God's creation of the world doesn't seem so relevant anymore? It Would kind of put a damper on the Earthcentric viewpoint, wouldn't it? |

What if? I'm pretty sure there is other intelligent life out there...we just haven't found it yet. The universe is very large. |

The Flat Earth society would commit suicide. Good riddance. The bible thumpers who will scream how you're so wrong for not believing them might...MIGHT...shut the hell up and get out of everyone's faces. On the other hand, they might see this as evidence of satan intervening and trying to bring about the antichrist and would therefore become more crazy about pushing their religion down your throat. Probably the second option there. Of course, if they were some completely different form from humanoid, which is most likely, then you would have some ammunition to shut up the "we're made in god's image" crap. I'd like to see aliens land if they were cool like Spock and such. Or if they were hot like that V lady. |

I don't think you have a very solid understanding of most monotheistic beliefs. Personally, I don't believe the Bible is a literal transcription of how we came to be. I believe it is a book of stories that were written by men in an attempt to teach others about God. If aliens showed up tonight, I would probably presume they were a creation of God. I have no reason to think we are the center of everything. I also think our spiritual education can continue to expand much like our scientific education... In short, you would have a lot of confused Southern Baptists, but other than that, I don't necessarily think everyone would denounce God. The belief of a creator is something that will likely never be proven wrong, regardless of what science says. I believe in evolution, I believe in the big bang. I also believe there is a reason we are here. I believe there is something bigger than us. Now that I think about it, you would probably have a lot of people who thought the aliens were actually God. So many people in many religions want the world to end so they can face judgment and get on with enjoying heaven. |

That's a helluva good viewpoint if you ask me. I grew up surrounded by southern baptists and other extremely narrow minded evangelical christians whose heads would probably explode if aliens landed. While I don't subscribe to your particular thinking, I can respect it and would probably enjoy a conversation with you on such topics - whereas there is no conversation at all with many on such topics. |

A reasonable response, even though I don't agree with you about there being a reason why we're here. It will be interesting to see how it plays out on the show. |

First, 4/10. I'm inclined to grade a lot lower, but obviously you've gotten serious responses (like the following). Second, there is almost certainly other intelligent life in the universe--there's a lot of universe out there (and it's expanding). However, the human species is almost certain not to encounter whatever intelligent life there might be. In this universe, it doesn't look like faster-than-light travel is possible; with that constraint, and the likelihood that humans will only last a few million more years at best, the chance of humans' encountering intelligent aliens is almost vanishingly small. In any case, if you think the religious "fanatics" would not be able to stay religious in the face of non-human intelligent life, you know very little about human religions. |

I think I will watch. I remember the original series, but not very well. I was so young. I just remember that when they wore those skin suits, I thought they were naked. I would like to see the original again to see how sexy the original show really was... |

Pretty sure? And your evidence is...? A kid in a high school class once did a report in front of the class saying basically "If only one percent of all stars had planets and only one percent of planets had liquid water and only one percent of planets with liquid water had...there would still be (large number) of planets with intelligent life on them". Sorry, that is not a real argument. "The universe is very large" is not one either. And you're pretty sure? No, actually you are wild ass guessing. |

This is what is so strange to me... I mean, no one knows for sure, but so many people are so quick to say, "Well, of course we don't know for sure, but I am right and I will kill you b/c you disagree with me." Why does everything think they are right? |

My guess is that you would not be too happy to see them land. History suggests that when one more advanced culture comes across one less advanced it is not happy days for the less advanced. |

Discovery of extra-terrestrial life would not shake the religious fanatics. They haven't been fazed by the evidence of evolution or anything else disproving their scripture, so why would you expect them to care about this? Brainwashing is a powerful thing. |

You use the term fanatics, so I assume you mean fanatics, as opposed to simply people who believe in God. Right? Many people believe in God and also understand and accept evolution. |
