Dude, you are 70. To hell with running- focus on staying alive and preserving your mobility. Lift weights to keep your bones and muscles strong but don't risk your joints just to pull of an absurdly slow 200m performance. No, you aren't going to get it back. Don't cripple yourself. |

Why not start working on endurance first. Ed whitlock jogs at your maximal sprinting pace for 200 meters. This is a cruel thing to say but i think you are better of buying a heart rate monitor as soon as possible and to start walking with it strapped on and build to 2 Miles of powerwalking in less then 30 minutes with a heart rate of 100 - 110. Then slowly start jogging at the same pace but find your optimal heart rates. Whilst a 70 year old might have heart rates anywhere between 140 - 170. Generally a safe way is to train at the maffetone method. 180 - Age 180 - 70 = 110 if healthy add 5 bpm 110 + 5 = 115 if older then 65 add 5 bpm (unless MHR is below 145) 115 + 5 = 120 The following 5 years keep at that heart rate then drop 3 off that number keep doing that every 5 years. The goal is to work your quality aerobic conditioning at 110 - 120 bpm and maybe add some work at 90 - 110 bpm as you get more in shape. Your heart might be beating at 170 now but it will quickly start beating slower as you get fit and you grow older. Maffetone doesn't see at maximal heart rate a lot for that reason. This might barely be a walk with breaks at first but keep at it. Slowly increase duration and start doing different sports. Also do the same with lifting wear the monitor while lifting. And on warm up it should stay below this level. Only at the hardest lifts it may creep over. But you want to get to a fitness level where you can lift weights in high reps and stay at or below that level. You could supplement the weight lifting, walks and runs with swimming with a heart rate monitor. This will certainly make training more interesting. And sprint only 2 days a week and don't make it exhausting. There is no reason why a 70 year old can't be ripped btw. If you can lift and do a lot of cardio you should have a six pack. You could do harder methods but they are not as healthy long term. You are better of with decent volume medium weight lifts that are not causing a lot of stress and a lot of aerobical conditioning and a couple of days of sprinting. |

thanks for the interest and advice .I WILL NOT GIVE UP , I am the Satch - I WILL run every running event, other than the steeple and hurdles, from 60 m to the marathon as fast as I can , will probably be mediocre in all ,and die running. I never heard of mafetone but am now mixing running sprints with 3k and will start running 5K soon. |

running is not just for distance runners. why shouldnt masters runners try for PRs in the sprints even if they run slow times compared to really fast older runners? 50 in the 200m , IS A DECENT TIME FOR OVER 65 RUNNERS. |
