I asked myself what would be needed to get (an athlete) on the cover on the biggest sportsmagazine in the USA: Sports Illustrated? Will an American victory in the NYC marathon in a USA-singlet be enough? Otherwise, if this isn't sufficiënt, what will do? |

The World Series is also going on right now... What is going to sell more magazines - a cover story on the WS or a cover about a marathoner? I hope I am wrong, but I think Meb will be a victim of bad timing. |

Oregon's win over USC will make the cover... Sadly what Meb did isn't enough |

No, the WS and NFL are still cover material for this week. |
| LOL surely |
| ||
|
Umm, Meb made yahoo news headlines for about 15 minutes..... No one cares. |

Runners World sells more copies than Sports Illustrated. |

How about the above ("an American victory in the NYC marathon in a USA singlet") PLUS and american sounding name PLUS a white face ?? I think that is the trifecta needed. Maybe Meb should have changed his name to something more anglo-american sounding like, I don't know, Lance Hall, and worn white-face for the race to trick SI. Hey, it was the day after Halloween, wasn't it?? (but in all seriousness, is an east-african born runner winning a major marathon news???? It's only been done about 100 times the last 20 years. And I am NOT saying Meb is not a "real american." Just saying..... from the perspective of where he was born, is this news?) |

It's football season and the World Series is going on. Those are both much bigger stories than any marathon, no matter who wins it. If an American won Boston (in April when there isn't that much going on) a runner might make the cover. It will never happen this time of year. |

Maybe Michael Jackson? Was there also that much 'he isn't American' talk after winning silver in Athens '04? |

"Will Meb be the first Distance Runner in a long time on the cover of SI?" Not unless it includes an extensive cover story that makes a liberal rationalization for why we're supposed to accept the guy as an AMERICAN athlete. So...I guess the answer to your question is yes. |

football sucks. and is boring. |
| it would be cool but |

No chance. Not that I wouldn't love to see it but... What would it take? Probably an olympic marathon gold (wouldn't compete with world series, super bowl or nba finals). |
| sorry |

Try and find the story on espn.com. |

football sucks. and is boring.[/quote] ...and is watched by 15 million Americans every Sunday. Just because you like running and don't like football doesn't mean that Sports Illustrated is going to change its cover for you. |

There was a blurb in this morning's Wall St. Journal on Meb, stating (with tongue firmly implanted in cheek) with American successes, Baseball and football should watch out, Quote, "Will Monday Night Football be replaced by 10,000m Saturday?" |

Let's hope not. He is a nice guy-would hate to see him fall victim to the curse. |

I thought SI had that drug cheat, Lance Armstrong on their cover. You know, the doper that NYRR and BAA sucks up to. |

Can't wait for that! What time is 10,000m Saturday going to be on? |

Wow. That was stupidly inaccurate. Actually: SI has 3 million subscribers who receive the magazine every week. RW has 640,000 subscribers per month. |
