What is wrong with my foot? 11/1/2009 5:57PM Reply | Return to Index | Report Post
Ok, so about 10 weeks ago I sorta self diagnosed a stress fracture and went on hiatus from running. I had started incorporating barefoot mileage into my workouts for better form, and I'm sure that's what did it.

Flash forward to the present: it felt gone, as in no more pain, so I did some really short and light runs. It felt tender, but no big deal, I just kept it short and rested a day between runs. It felt like it was getting stronger, so I did a slow 5K. No pain on the run or after, but the next morning it was sore.

It's in the same place as before (2nd metatarsal), but it feels different. It's nowhere near as painful...not debilitating at all, either. Enough to make me favor the other foot when jumping across a rock gap, but otherwise I can still run fine (I've only been doing so to test it, though). In fact, on grass it's pretty much pain free.

It hurts most when I curl all of my toes but flex my big toe. It also feels more nerve-y, if that makes sense. In fact, I get a kind of nerve-y burn into the 2nd toe when I move my foot around much, and the nerve-y burn in the toe is sorta present even when sitting and resting. putting my toes toe-nail down while sitting and slightly pushing alleviates this. There is NO other pain when resting, sitting, sleeping, etc...

So, I'm kinda thinking this is another injury that's maybe connected to the SF and not another SF itself, but it could just be coincidental. It's been 5 days...I can walk, jump, run, cut, sprint and everything. I do have some point tenderness, but again it feels more like a pinched nerve kinda than the ache of a fracture.

A few things have come up on my searches on the 'net...one being a nerve issue with feet flattening. I don't think that's it (could very easily be wrong) because I have VERY strong arches as it is, and do arch strengthening exercises. Plus I'm young enough I'd be surprised to see age taking it's toll already in this regard.

Another thought was tendonitis. Yet another has it relating to sciatica that I've had on and off for years. I know I have a slight anterior pelvic tilt, and that weak glutes and abs have caused a L4-L5 pinch on my left side. Strengthening exercises have all but alleviated that. However, sometimes when I run and the pain comes in my foot (only occurs on impact, too...no lingering pain) I also feel a nerve twinge up my sciatic nerve in my knee, hip and lower back. So, I feel like I am getting a pinch from whatever this is.

Anyone had this? I'm hesitant to see a doc as I'm laid off and on COBRA and I'm afraid he'll call for MRIs and Bone Scans and all sorts of crapola that I'll have to pay for outta my pocket.

Thanks

Thought about that, but when I run and it hurts, it doen't hurt on the ball...it hurts up inside high on the 2nd metatarsal like a SF would.

Lupus is a pretty serious concern! I know I should see a doc, but I like to try and give it my best first.

Thanks

It sounds like its still the same stress fracture that hasn't healed all the way. I'd take another week or two off if I were you. How much time did you take off in the first place? What kind of xtraining were you doing?
Could be...

You can also have some pain even when the SFX is healed. Not saying that's it, but I had an sfx in a metatarsal and it probably bugged me up to 5 or 6 months after. Might be worth getting it looked at though just in case maybe you're compensating a bit and distributing weight strangely.

Could be a neuroma. Morton's neuroma is common in individuals with flat feet and runners, but it is usually btw 3rd and 4th metatarsal. Just a thought though.

I had thought that might be it, and do now. I think the longer, 5K run was just a bit much and stressed it out. Having babied it since Sunday it's back to "normal" again and I only feel the slight tenderness when I run in place today. I think I need to just keep it real easy and mellow for a good while...maybe not run again for a week to make sure any weakness I might exploit is given a good time to recover.

that sounds like the classic symptoms of mesoplagiatis. i had a teamate that suffered from this rare condition in college. The best course of action, I believe, is rest and antibiotics.
