Fall Marathon Training- Week Ending 11/1 11/1/2009 5:07PM Reply | Return to Index | Report Post
Figured I would start it up. Ran 2:45:23 today in NYC. Was happy with it. A solid debut and I went for sub 2:40 and didn't blow up quite as bad as I could have. I recognized it was a gamble (as you guys know, I had as my goal 2:45 up until a few weeks ago) and it sort of paid off. I don't think I would have run that much faster had I gone out in 1:21 or 2 (went out in 1:19:20).

Anyway, here is the race summary:

Mile 1- Uphill- 6:27. About a 1/2 mile in I felt like there was a rock under my shoe. Stopped to check and there wasn't. Figured my sock was bunched under the ball of my foot, but that wasn't it either. Figured I would have to deal with it (it got very painful throughout).

Mile 2- Downhill- 5:37. Latched onto a bunch of guys who were shooting for 2:40 and started to work together

MIke 3- 6:04- Perfect

Mile 4 and 5- 11:53... too fast, and found myself out in front of the group I was going to stay with. Ended up running alone from there until 1st avenue. It was really windy, and in my face the whole time. Think this made a BIG difference in my final time.

Mile 6- 5:52... All I remember is I need to reel it in. I was already 45 seconds up on a goal pace I knew was aggressive...

Mile 7-8- 12:08. Was proud of myself for slowing it back down. Was feeling good.

Mile 9- 6:03- perfect

Mile 10- 5:59 Don't remember

Mile 11- 6:15... made another effort to slow down and if I remember correctly, it was uphill

Mile 12- 5:57. downhill and started to get tired.

Mille 13- 6:13. Tried to relax and freshen the legs up

Half Marathon- 1:19:20. Was right where I wanted, but knew here that I was not going to be able to run sub 2:40.

Mile 14- 6:!4- Was thinking, get to 59th street bridge and into Manhattan.

Mile 15- 6:28- Left hammy started to get really tight and this was uphill, if I remember going up onto the 59th street bridge.

MIle 16- 6:21- Buddy from another team who was shooting for 2:40 (he ran 2:40:20 I think) caught right at the end of this mile and I decide to try and stay with him as long as I could. I knew I was in trouble, and couldn't imagine running 10 more miles. but tried to relax. I knew my hamstrings were going on me as they were getting tight fast.

Mile 17 & 18- 12:09. Onto first ave. Didn't look at my watch but knew I picked it up. I could think about at 18 was "don't prove my everyone right" with regards to going out too fast. Haha..

Mile 19- 6:22. My bud pulled away. Thinking get to 23... its OK if you die with 3 miles to go.. but you don't want to be the guy who dies in the last 10k.

Mile 20- 6:37. Hammy's officially cramped. Both.

Mile 21- 7:00, Had to stretch if I wanted to get to the finish. Lost 20 seconds doing that, but probably saved me over a minute.

Mile 22- 6:44. From here on out the thought was the same, "can I run 8:00 miles and still break 2:50?" and then would do the math.

Mile 23- 6:43. Had small bouts of "I can rally and close well" with large bouts of "someone shoot me... 3 miles, 24 minutes" leaves me with...

Mile 24- 7:00. Uphill on 5th ave. Thought I was done.

Mile 25- 6:58. Struggling to maintain, but rallied when I saw my wife, my dad, brother, inlaws and my kids and burst out in a big smile and gave high 5s (did the same thing at 17 when I saw them)

Mile 26- 6:41. Was now thinking 2:45... just get in under 2:46 so you can end up with your original goal of 2:45

.2- 1:25. Loved that last 400 yard countdown.

2:45:23 and my first thought was "I can run 5:55's on a flat course in a year's time".

I wouldn't change much in my buildup or race. I think I hit what I needed to after 2 years off and all I need is just another year of good work under my belt.

Thanks for all the encouragement guys. It was huge. Can't wait to hear other recaps.

Nice work 1TM! Good to get one under your belt without crashing too bad.

Good mileage this week, with 93 miles, and the first solid long MP session, with 12 a bit faster than goal pace in a 16 mile run.

Also ran 21 Saturday with 3 fast near the end, then a brisk 12 with a group of buddies today.

Off to Chile in an hour - anyone know the running scene in Santiago? I'll try my best to maintain decent volume, and may even manage a good long run next weekend!

Have a great weekend evryone!

Great Job 1st Timer!

Now the first one is out of the way, you can really focus on what to improve and watch your time really drop.

By the way, it looks like you ran most of the way with my buddy who ran 2:43. He went through the half in 1:19:2x, you guys ran similar splits the entire way.

Mere Mortal - Enjoy San Antonio. It was a great marathon last year, but get to the buses to the start line early!

Pablo - any good races down your way in the near term? I'm starting to get the itch.

I think I'm doing OUC Half Marathon in downtown Orlando on Dec 5th. The winning time is usually right around 1:10, but the last time I ran it (2006) it was brutally hot out and I got 2nd in 1:14.

My training has been non-existent since Chicago, I've been running around 15-20 miles per week since the marathon. Basically enjoying my time off. Now, I'm feeling fat and slow so I need to get at it again. I told myself that this week I'll start to get back into it. I'll be lucky to run sub 1:16, but I really enjoy doing this race for the beer garden afterwards :)

That might work well. I'm supposed to be in Orlando Dec. 4. I could just spend the night and jump in on the 5th.

I'm pacing a buddy of mine at the Jacksonville Marathon two weeks later, so this will be a good tune up.

I better lose some weight!

I went through the half in 1:14:30 or so and ran 2:34:49...so I had a pretty similar experience as you in terms of going out to fast, but was left with the same impression as I was really happy I went after. Mile 24 was the toughest mile i have ever run in my life..haha I literally could not see after it.

I've been to Santiago. The running isn't too bad there. I wasn't there for a long time, so I wasn't really able to find any good trail systems or anything. But I did have some very nice runs up into the foothills on the edges of town. Santiago is completely surrounded by mountains, so you can get in some serious hill running if you so choose. My recommendation if you're staying downtown (I was at the Marriott on Ave. Presidente Kennedy) would be to run north or east to the foothills. Once you get to the edges of town, you'll have a lot less traffic, and you'll get into some very hilly (and pretty) terrain. Good luck and enjoy Chile. It's a beautiful country.

First full week of training for White Rock after the Chicago fiasco.

M: 8.5 easy
Tu: 9.5 tempo @ 6:35 pace
W: 8.5 easy
Th: 7.5 easy
F: 11.0 total -- 9.2 @ 6:40 pace (4 x 2.3 loop, starting at 7:00 and cutting to 6:30), 1.8 wu/cd
Sa: 6 easy
Sun: 20.5 easy (7:10 pace).
Total: 71.5

All of this at altitude. Tempo was (barely) a PR, but I think that was the result of being relatively fresh and not relatively fit. I had a 12-13 steady state planned for Thursday, but a blizzard prevented that -- I was lucky to get a snowy and slippery 7.5 in in the afternoon. The only place I could run on Friday to approximate it was a plowed 2.3 park loop about a mile from my house. Long run was nondescript. Felt so-so, nothing really painful and nothing really fast. Mainly just getting used to a 2.5 hour run after a month without one.

That last 10k got to you...nonetheless great job 1stTimerM. Your first half looked as though you had happy feet, felt that good eh? I was reduced to sitting at home watching the elites and rooting for the American men (Grats Meb!). Only been jogging 2-3 days a week until my knee fully recovers.

Going to try again next year?

Goal Race: 2010 Boston
Goal Time: 2:49:59 (Looks like a dream right now)

Nice job 1TM. Great time on a really tough course. I will be running NY next year. I ran it as my first back in '06.

My training "week" if you want to call it that.

M: 5.21 @ 8:44 AHR 134
T: Off
W: 5 @ 8:39 AHR 133 (TM)
R: Off
F: 6.01 @ 8:39 AHR 135
S: 6.12 @ 8:41 AHR 137
S: 7.02 @ 8:33 AHR 135
Tot: 29.4

I still suck since Chicago. 6 week HADD base period started yesterday. +7-8 lbs. I would have a tough time running a 3:15-3:20 right now. I've abandoned all hopes for racing this fall. At least I got a 32 second 10k PR to go along with the 2:54 marathon PR. Maybe I'll do a turkey trot.

Cutter,

Feeling OK. My legs are really sore (hip flexors, quads, hamstrings) but not awful. Stairs kind of stink. I raked and mowed my yard today, so I obviously could be worse. My daughter kept running away from me so I would chase after her this morning and it didn't feel like I was going to die or anything. Going to take 2 weeks off, though, then start ramping up again (probably start with a 45-55 mile week and add 10 mpw til I get up to about 100). Don't really know what this whole Post-Marathon depression is all about. I'm ready to get after it again today. If my legs felt better, and I didn't swear I would take 2 weeks off, I would definitely run today. I want to.

Pablo, Did he have arm warmers? Kind of tall?

Most of the time I was 10-20 feet back from a few guys and 10-20 feet ahead of a few guys. I should have slowed up or sped up to work with those groups, but didn't.

LA, yeah... I knew I was going too fast, and when I tried to slow down, I just didn't feel right. Cutting my stride so that I was running 6:10 pace felt so uncomfortable. My body so badly just wanted to settle into 5:55-6:00 pace. Not going to do NYC next year. I want to run Chicago so I can do a faster/flatter course, I think. Though I'll decide next spring.

The main thing I need to improve on is getting in more miles. I want to run lots of 80, 90, 100 mile weeks this winter and work on my speed a bit. I didn't do much until June of this year, and not having that base definitely hurt me.

So how are we going to do this now? Start a Fall 2010 training thread and then just post our winter/spring goals and training and let it bleed into next fall?

Figured I'd post my result wanted to run faster, but the weather had other ways of thinking "windy".

Ran 2:23:50 and 25th overall, 14 overall American and goal was top 15 overall American and sub 2:19 so i achieved one of the two goals i had set. It was a blast to race against and beat Olympians, even if they had a bad day.

Now it's time for me to rest and relax and plan on when i will be racing another in the spring.

Congrats to all that ran prior to NY and at NY!

I like the idea of starting a Fall 2010 thread. Don't we have some Philly guys on here though?

Yup, there are still some Philly guys. I would have posted earlier, but today's my 40th, so I've been enjoying it - 20 miler this am followed by shooting a 79 at a local golf course with my Dad. Now I get to eat and drink whatever I want tonight!

Goal <2:55
Race Philly

Another good week for me as I hit 70 again. I know it's modest, but that is 4 times in this training cycle when I had only done it twice ever in my life.

Mon - 18+ @ 7:08 Better than expected day after a race
Tues - Off
Wed - 10 @ 7:18 (Easy - Actually ran this w/ HR monitor at my recovery HR)
Thurs - 5 @ 7 followed by 3x mile (5:44,5:50,5:43) then some cool-down
Fri - 15 @ 7:01 Working but comfortable if that makes any sense.
Sat - 5 @ 7:30 Easy recovery
Sun - 10K race 37:57 plus 4.5 warmup/cooldown. First half back and forth over a major bridge, second half very flat. Very even paced minus the bridge effect on pace.

The only thing that worries me a bit about my training is the lack of extended runs at goal pace of 6:35-40. I'm going to try to add more of that in the last few weeks, just have to be careful not to overdo it.

Very nice job all you NY guys by the way. I was up there last year and had a great time (ran it ON my birthday) so I know what the wind can be like.
