Hey guys, hope all is well. My week ends with 60 total and a 14 miler this morning. Still feeling a bit sluggish due to some illness. And because of constantly having to clear my throat/nasals I've developed a strained jaw and haven't been able to chew food very well the last few days. Boy you take for granted chewing food until you can't any longer. Even running hurts my jaw. Anyway great job by Meb today at NY. Six out of the top 10 were Americans! A proud day for American runners. Anyone here run it? AK-51, did you give it a go? Topic of the week: Nutrition So what do you guys put in that high performance body of yours? Carbs, protein, supplements? Meat eaters, vegans? I try to keep it balanced. I love my meats but also eat lots of angel hair pasta along with other carbs. And veggies, fruits, lots of bananas. Also take a daily multi-vitamin and occasional whey protein powder drink after hard workouts. Post away! |

Sun, 10/25: 10 miles easy-moderate (7:15 avg.) Mon, 10/26: planned OFF. Tue, 10/27: 2+ mile warmup, 5 x 800m w/1:25 rests (2:54, 2:55, 2:55, 2:56, 2:56), 4 x 200m all in :38 (UGH, I have NO speed!), 2+ mile cool down. Day's total = ~8 miles. Wed, 10/28: 6 miles easy (7:30 avg.). Thu, 10/29: 8 miles easy (7:30 avg.). Fri, 10/30: cross-trained 30 mins. intervals on LifeCycle, 3000m hard on rowing machine. Sat, 10/31: 6.5 miles easy on Lacamas Heritage trail. Weekly total = 38.5 miles. Lifted weights on Mon, Tue, Thu. Nutrition - I don't pay special attention to it. I have a wicked metabolism and burn off food as fast as I consume it. Last cholesterol check was 141, so maybe I'm just lucky (or oblivious). |

Last Sunday ran the Cape Cod Marathon in 3:22. This week ran the Manchester Marathon in 3:29. I used to eat all the ice cream I ever could want and everything else. It doesn't burn off so easy anymore! This summer I started eating healthier foods: fruits, veggies, nuts, meat and other heathy food and cut out the sugar and processed foods including pasta and breads. I have been slipping away from this the past month, but will return. |

Weekly total of 34 miles. Body seemed to be happier with me all week and allowed me to get in two great sessions. I even ran long on Sunday. Nutrition: I'll admit that I don't eat very well. I believe my new year's resolution will include a change in diet. Possibly getting away from white bread and some ice cream. I eat ice cream every night and I drink 4-6 regular cans of pop per day. I don't eat anything with fake sugar in it ever so it's all normal corn syrup stuff. I also have a habit of eating almost 100% carbs (complex and simple); pasta, breads, veges, etc. I'll be listening for someone to post a 'protein rich' diet as it seems to me that added protein at my age is something I need to be doing. |

44 miles, 6 runs, 2 workouts this week. The training plan was for 64 miles this week. I had a good workout on Monday and then on Tuesday I just had no energy and packed it in after an easy 4 miles. Same thing on Wednesday and Thursday. Friday felt a little better, and Saturday felt pretty normal. Yesterday I ran with my son and it turned into a very good, long, hard tempo run (for me, easy tempo for my son), so hopefully, I am back on my program after an unplanned recovery week. |

Wow, that's some pretty intense passage clearing! You still maintained good mileage for the week. I had 26 mi in 4 runs; Sun- 4 mi jog Tues- 14x( 30 sec at 18 min 5k pace and 30 jog) Thurs- 6 mi jog Sat- attempted to do a 4 mi tempo at 24 min, but ended up at 24:50. Then 6x 10 sec hill sprints I over eat, but don't gain weight. I try to avoid white flower, white rice etc. Do use vitamins. |

for me it's been yet a continuation of my another-week-another-injury year. this time, the achilles has been responding well to acupuncture, which is terrific -- i was able to go on a real live hike (an hour-20) on friday and run for a whole 22 minutes at a reasonably brisk pace on saturday -- but my saturday evening hour-long session on the bike trainer with hand weights left me with something new in my upper quad/hip flexor area. hopefully this will pass soon with lots of icing and two or three days of complete rest. geez, i'm only 49. let's hope things take a general turn for the better by the time i'm officially sanctioned on this thread. as for nutrition, i shoot for a colorful balance of real food, heavy on fruits, veggies, and whole grains, but i also turn to egg whites and tuna for animal protein and am more drawn to ice cream than i'd prefer. since my anemia this spring/summer, eating has been a little challenging, since i need to separate the time between intake of iron plus vitamin C from calcium plus vitamin D, both in terms of actual food and supplements. |

I gave it my best shot at NYC, perhaps foolishly. Ran first 10K at 635 or 640 pace and felt pretty good, but knee got tight after that. 1/2 in 1:28 hanging in there but all hell broke loose after qweensborough bridge and knee locked up at 18. Required wheel chair and taxi ride to ER. ITBS sucks. |

I'm feeling sluggish again this week too. 23.8 miles in 5 days. I'm taking a few days off until I get some energy. It was a great day Saturday watching the Hamdawgs from Hamline win the MIAC. They really moved up the last mile on a windy, cold and sloppy course. M-4.1 38 min T-6.4 of trails, 65 min W- off T-7 in 81 min F-3 in 27 min S-3.3 in 35 mins, walked the last mile I take a multi-vitamin and fish oil and shoot for 5 servings of fruits/veggies per day. I eat a lot of casseroles this time of year. Soda's are also my downfall Typically 2 diet and 2 w sugar per day. Good luck to all this week. |

Ouch AK. I planned on heading out to Staten Island as well, but only getting back to Manhattan before dropping out. But, alas, I got a twinge in my left knee on Wednesday, and it was achy so on Friday I officially canceled (which at least assures me entry into the race in 2010). (To review, I've entered the race in 2004, 2006, 2007, 2008, and 2009. I've made it to the start once in that stretch. 2004 I had shoulder surgery, 2007 I ran the Reach-the-Beach Relay and decided (with strong encouragement from my wife) that that was my big effort for the year. 2008 I broke my elbow in August. This year, I was far too soft to think of racing. 2011, however, and I enter the 55-59 AG.) So my mileage for the week was very low. I ran 6 yesterday, and things seemed fine, but now I have this moving pain around the knee, roving in that sometimes it's in the knee, sometimes just nearby. So I'll give it a few days to calm itself down. |

On nutrition, I don't give it a lot of thought. I don't eat that much meat, although I don't actively avoid it. I eat tons of pasta during the week plus a fair amount of junk food like potato chips. I end up having a fair chunk of vegetables as well. I don't take any supplements or vitamins. My weight has been pretty stable, in a 10 lb. range since college, although it gets to the lower end of that spectrum if I'm doing a lot of mileage. I'm, relatively speaking, a bigger guy, at 5'10", 165. |

If not an enjoyable saga, NYCM 2009 will be a memorable one to be sure. You already know this, but Fridtjof Nansen says it so well."Nothing hardens the body and makes it so strong and elastic; nothing gives better presence of mind and nimbleness;nothing steels the willpower and freshens the mind as cross-country skiing. This is something that develops not only the body but the soul--it has far deeper meaning for people than many are aware of." (Hope the mods don't strike this on the basis of heresy.) Ran a Rails to trails Marathon yesterday. The 3;57 was arrived at in an erratic manner. That was somewhat devil may care and the remainder willful. 5 mile 39:10 10 mile 35:14=74:24 1/2 mara. 1:40;30 wheels came off around 15 miles. Jogged and walked to the finish, Beautiful scenery and a quaint old school format. The grilled chicken at the Towns' center was delicious. Diet; I try to stay clear of white bread/flour foods. No soda, alcohol sparingly. The rest is fair game in moderation |

AK51, Sorry to hear about the ITBS. Yes, it is terrible. I've read your posts for years on the Masters thread and admired our ability to train so hard; so often. Heal up quickly. |

AK, the ER, Yikes! You must have been in some serious pain. Hope everything works out in a short time frame. Same goes for the rest of you at the med tent. TDF, great job on those back to back marathons. I hear they're both tough courses. nls, that Joanie is something isn't she? I'd love to see her break the 50-55 record. Keep in mind guys that if you have any topic of the week you'ld like me to put out there let me know. I'm just kind of arbitrarily going along. Any and all suggestions welcome! |

300 minutes total. Half marathon yesterday - first race in 20 months and after knee surgery one year ago. 1:32:55. Could have run farther but not faster due to intentional lack of speed work, other than a few strides mid-week and a tempo run every other week. The diet is fairly balanced and healthy thanks to my wife. I read an article about 2 years ago about the self-perpetuating craving from eating junk and sweets. I stopped the sugary pop, candy, pastries and the like for a few weeks and a lifelong sweet tooth evaporated. I take one chondroitin/glucosamine tab per day. |

Joanie is amazing. Congrats to her on another phenomenal run. She has put together a stellar year on the circuit. Key training points she shared during her talk at Grandma's. #1. Doubles most days. #2. Loves to garden and ski(alpine and X-C). #3.Track work sparingly, if at all. Total respect for this Lady. She is a wonderful ambassador for our Sport. |

Missed last week - procrastinated too far into the week. Logged 26 miles, limited by migraines and family obligations. Got in a long of 8+ and a couple of runs morphed into tempos. Since I'm new, I'll give a little background and a pretty typical week just completed. Will hit 62 yrs. later this month. Never anything special but more competitive as I have gotten older. Don't race all that often as I'm usually nursing something. I run from work during the day which limits the scope of my mileage some. Usually run 6 days per week. Normal run is a progression partly because it is just natural to me and also because it takes about 3 miles to get loosened up. M - 6 mi - first 8:24/last 6:50 T- 7 mi - easy 8:35/7:14 W - 6 mi - 8:16/6:43 T - 6 mi - easy 8:57/7:26 F - 6 mi - 8:10/6:22 (last 4 tempo) S = 6 mi - 8:19/6:59 S - off As for diet, the doctor took me to task a couple of years ago and sent me to a dietician. From the limitations she advised, I concluded that of your average bag of groceries it was okay if I ate the paper sack. Must admit, cutting down on sugar did lose me ten pounds and a nice chunk of time off my 5K. |
