Just got the email telling me to register ASAP.

Anyone have an idea how close to full the field really is?

WTF, I am not qualifying until January... Shit, can I pre-register prior to my race and then have it confirmed?

I have run Boston 6 times. I just took a few years off from marathoning to race some faster 10ks.

Sorry CandyMan, it won't be open by then. I don't think they do the pre-register then qualify route.

Right now its at 11,004. It closed when it got to 20,600 last year. They still haven't processed the Chicago race BQ'ers which will probably be boatload. They've been added over 200+ a day.

I don't know. When i ran it in 2008, I did not sign up until that December or January. I want to say very beginning of January...

Well, maybe I'll do a fun race somewhere out west or something. My wife and I just wanted to go up to Boston again next year. Damn. Oh well, she'll be happy if I choose some race in Napa or something.

Last year it closed in the beginning of February. I expect this year to close faster, so January is a good guess.

Yeah I just got the email and think I will send off the app. soon.
I would think all the folks shut out last February sent their apps in this year right off the bat in September.

12,021 confirmed entrants. (Not those you have registered, that is more). Over a month ahead of last year. So about 3,000 runners added in about 9 days. About 335 a day. It closed around 20,800 last year, so I give it maybe 25 more days...Right around Thanksgiving.

Boston should up their qualifying standards by five minutes across the board for all age groups. Then it wouldn't fill up in November or something like that.

Second the motion. It used to be 2:55 for men. It is now a joke and there are too many spots given to charity entries. Boston just doesn't have the stature it used to have for the amature runner.

Back in the early 80's, the qualifying time was 2:50.

They won't run your card until they confirm your time.

Yup, and the only reason the BAA sent the email was so that when people complain that it closed earlier than ever, the BAA can say: "We told you so."

Because we all know the story and have read so many posts of runners whinning and complaining that they didn't register in time and when it closes they're S.O.L.

Throughout the last years, Boston registration closed a month earlier each time. I can seriously see Boston registration closing on the same day it opens in a few years if they don't change their qualification standards...

I wonder how many DNS they get if they're full by November? I'd be curious to see if that number increases the earlier registration fills up.

I had to break 2:50 in 88 and 89 when I ran. Does anyone have a history of the qualifying marks at Boston? And, I agree. Bring back the stiffer qualifying marks. I think that in the late seventies you had to break 3:00 if male under 40 and - help me out - 3:30 if over 40 or a woman. There may have even been a time when you just had to break 3:00. The decline in the number of people running those sorts of times has many causes, but Boston becoming a charity event cum soft qualifying times is one of the major ones. The sport would improve significantly if they re-established the qualifying marks from the eighties - as would the event.

Totally agree. I ran 2:53 at Jersey Short in 1983 and just missed qualifying for Boston. I was proud of the PR but a little miffed. Still, the need to squeeze down my time would have driven me to do so. People will rise to the challenge. Boston can only gain in stature by tightening up the qualifying times--if not to early 80s times, then at least to a point where significant numbers of current qualifiers no longer qualify. The outcry would be huge--and salutary. When you define excellence downward, you discourage not just the truly excellent, but the mass of honorable strivers who really WOULD push themselves a little harder, and care a little more.

I can't believe I had to look this up:
http://www.gmodules.com/dictionary?aq=f&langpair=en%7Cen&q=salutary&hl=en

I never thought I'd learn anything unrelated to running on this site. I teach math. I think from now on, the course description on my syllabus will be that one word: salutary. I'm gonna put it on f**ing T-Shirts.

And thank you,Kudzu! You taught me a new word. The fact that the word is not too common is very telling, though.
