It looks like the NYC marathon could be cold, rainy and windy. Right now weather.com is saying a high of 54 (so likely in the 40s during the race) with NNW winds at 8mph with a chance of rain. Should these conditions change my race plan at all? Was hoping to run 6:00 pace and now not so sure what I should do. Argh. Like 40,000 other people I was hoping for 50-55 with sun and no wind. I suppose it could still happen. Keep your fingers crossed. |

Well, everything but the wind is okay. Chance of rain is fine, you just don't want it pouring the whole time. NYC is always going to have some wind, so hopefully it will be mild since the race is early. If it does look like rain, just remember the lube. |

This is my first marathon... what is the lube? Like Vasoline to prevent chafing? My biggest fear is racing with sopping wet shoes. I seem to do significantly worse when I have wet shoes. Much worse then my training mates. |

If its pouring rain, it won't be the most pleasant race ever, but light rain should be fine. I wouldn't alter your race plan unless it is very rainy/windy/cold. And honestly, 8mph winds are nothing to get your undies in a knot over. If it is looking like it will rain, invest in a light baselayer (I would recommend something out of the Helly Hansen "HH One" or "HH Dry" series for rainy conditions, but to each his own) to wear under your racing kit and you'll be fine. They'll stay relatively dry unless it is pouring, and will keep you warmer (without overheating) regardless of the conditions. Whatever it is you get, don't get cotton, as cotton is awful in the rain. It'll chafe your nips right off. If it is still cold but not raining, you can get some arm warmers. Even the thin ones (asics makes some really simple ones for ~$8) will still keep you much warmer, and you can always toss them if you don't need then anymore during the race. |

Vasoline is a bad idea. Its messy and gets everywhere. Look for Body Glide at the Expo- its cheap and it won't ruin your clothes. |

sun is NOT something that we want during the race. clouds are good. light rain might be fine well into the day, but won't be pleasant waiting hours on SI in the rain. |

Like others are saying, those conditions aren't so bad. We had some nastiness up here on the 18th for the Bay State Marathon and a couple friends of mine ran PR's. Invest in a hat and some arm warmers. The wind is only an issue for the first 9 miles or so, when you're running on the bridge and on 4th avenue where there's very little cover. Still, the best advice I could give you is to overdress or bring a compact sleeping bag to the start area. It's windier at the Fort than you would expect. I wasn't prepared last year, and it's the coldest I remember feeling in a long time. It was a very unpleasant two hour wait for the start. There is no substitute for staying warm and toasty before heading to the start line. |

vaseline's water soluble and would dissolve away halfway through a marathon. Body Glide anti chafing is a good recommendation. |
| ah uh ok |

You must be kidding me. Stop being a Nancy! Conditions seem absolutely perfect for a marathon. Gosh, I can't stand people like you. You will use excuses for not meeting goal times because it was 54 degrees and not "ideal 48". So freaking lame! Now if it's 90 degrees or minus 10, that's a different story. |

Well, it will be a bit chilly before the start. Bring a long-sleeved shirt for after you've dropped off your baggage. You can take it off about 3 minutes before post-time -- it's always interesting to see what race-shirts people are prepared to get rid of -- and toss it to the side at the start. It'll be picked up after the start, cleaned, and given away. But, really, if anything it'll be on the warm side once the race is off. |

Thanks wayfool. I'm not being a pansy, I just wanted nice weather. Who wouldn't for a marathon (whether that be their 1st or 100th, whether you are Ryan Hall or me). This being my first, I kind of wanted to remove as many variables (like weather) that I could. That's why I practiced taking in water, gels, carbo loading, etc all before the race. Its why I trained 90+ miles per week and have tapered (I think) perfectly. Its why I have gotten massages and nailed my workouts and long runs. The one thing I can't control is the weather... so asking if I should change my pace goal given cold rain (it now says 50% chance) doesn't seem like such a ludicrous question to more experienced guys and girls. I figure I will keep my strategy the same and hope for the best. In my case, I seem to WAY underperform if my shoes get too wet. I don't know why, but it effects me a lot more then my training mates. This is what concerns me. But if the shoes stay light enough, I should be fine, I think. Did 20-21 in pouring rain a few weeks ago, so I've trained in it... just don't like racing in it. |

Ok, it was a bit harsh. OP, good luck Sunday! |
