Meant to post a link: http://cnnwire.blogs.cnn.com/
wow 36 and 26 very young..
since they collasped near the finish.. i would guess maybe due to over hydration
Time of death of runner crossing finish line (about 9:20am) must be inaccurate if race started at 7:15 as scheduled. Either that or some elite killed himself for new WR.
they were doing the half
Seeing as how this was the Detroit Marathon I would have assumed they were killed in a drive by shooting.

how funny
Hearing these type of things makes me quite nervous about attempting the marathon
These people probably were severly undertrained and perhaps had underlying medical conditions.
The only thing that should concern you about racing a marathon you have trained for is the likelihood of injury during the recovery period that follows.

3 Detroit marathon runners die
Posted: 02:44 PM ET
(CNN) — Three runners died Sunday during the Detroit Free Press/Flagstar Marathon in Detroit, Michigan, police told CNN.
All three deaths occurred between 9 and 9:20 a.m. ET, Second Deputy Chief John Roach said.
A man in his 60s fell and hit his head, Roach said. The cause of the fall was unknown. The man was transported to Detroit Receiving Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Two other men, aged 36 and 26, also collapsed during the race and were pronounced dead at the hospital, Roach said.
All three collapsed near the end of the race, he said.
The weather at the time was overcast, Roach said, with temperatures in the low 40s.
–CNN's Chuck Johnston contributed to this report.

It sounds like the two younger ones who died were doing the half marathon. And it sounds like the older guy who died in the marathon hit his head somehow. You can do that getting in and out of the bathtub.

There wasn't a cloud in the sky all morning.
Nice reporting.

How many bathtubs were there out on the race course today? That's what I thought.

you can get injured when you're taking 1-2 weeks off? or did you have in mind a more aggressive recovery?

The Free Press article says it wasn't known which race the two still on the course were running.

So it's misleading to say that the collapse occurred "near the end of the race." The locations reported (Michigan and First/Third) were after the 12 mile mark.
The reporting has been abysmal.

GOOD. This is not newsworthy.
If I hear one more report without mentioning the winners, I am going to slice my throat with a butter knife. I work at Detroit Recieving Hospital and we had 5 fatalities this weekend that had nothing to do with the marathon. CNN never showed up at the Hospital for a report. Finding fault with exercize is the goal of the media.
Swine Flu?

That was from the CNN article, the same one that said it was overcast. I don't think there was anything wrong with the Free Press article.

Well, the Freep asserts that the two collapses on Michigan Ave were between the 11 and 12 mile marks . . . when they were actually closer to 12.5.
If they would look at their own course map, they'd know that.
