I coach a high school team. I have one senior boy who is very talented and super active--ran a 4:50 mile as a freshman with no training, pr 9:40 in the 3200.
This kid is has always been super active -- a very good cyclist, swims, cc skis.
Anyway, all summer long in addition to running 40-50 miles per week, he put in 200-300 on the road bike.
He came into cross super fit and went 15:54 and 16:10 at out first two invitationals. But at our last two races his performances fell off--running high 16's/low 17's.
Our training program is sound and he and his teammates have done well with it in the past.
Since we're back to school and the weather's bad, he's eliminated the cycling. For the past 9 weeks all he's done is run. Could this have eroded his aerobic base and resulted in the poor recent performances?
What do you think?
Anyone else coach kids who reduce training volume when school starts only to have performance levels drop?
