yes probably probably.. though he might might just focus on the 10 KK.

His track performances are better than his XC exploits IMO, and of his XC performances, he seems to do better on flatter courses... he's a rhythm runner. All of that suggests marathon potential to me.

Spread the positive.
Chris Derrick is in his second year of college and displays incredible stamina, works hard and wins. Why be bitter? Isn't it refreshing that there are young people out here in the running world that we can respect and cheer on. He has not been over-sensationalized or exploited the way other athletes (or schools) have. Frankly, when I read about CD and Stanford I am happy: I do not sigh in disgust: Oh great another love fest for (fill in the blank w/ name we've read about 900 times.)
The kid held the AJR for the 5000 this year as a freshman, albeit briefly, and I remember the last guy before him who missed owning the AJR by two days because of his Dec. birthday in a faster time of 13:27 as a true frosh in college went on to become a marathoner. Lacking the results he had hoped for, he has since returned to the track, only to break the AR in the 5k and run sub-13:00. That's not to say that one day, he won't parlay it into a solid marathon, but it seems as though marathon training has helped his track exploits and not the other way around.

of course, where your last name is so good you have to say it twice. but any American who runs sub 13:30 at age 18 (?) is going to be going after the AR in the 5k by his mid twenties.
