Its OBVIOUS! They ran too HIGH MILEAGE at YOUNG AGE and BURNED OUT! Thats what happens- high mileage is a QUICK FIX. You have 100 kids run it, 7 stay alive and get good to run varsity, win states, then next year realize how much they HATE IT and QUIT For life. Coaches should be trying to establish LIFE LONG RUNNERS > state championship! HS XC should be FUN, running a good 25-40 miles per week depending on the kids and advocation of logical progression and interval running like the Kenyans.
who?
lmfao, burning out from high mileage! lol. kid is funny.seriously though, can't tell if he's joking or not...? either way it's funny. Almost any high school kid has the capacity to do 120 mile weeks. If they run at 10 min pace it should be reasonable. though 10 min pace is most likely too slow so 7:45-8:30 should be very do-able.

I was wondering this same thing the other day. I remember the top runner that they produced, a Crystal something, I'm drawing a blank on her name, went to University of Arizona? I don't remember seeing any results, but it could have been the college program.
If that is Crystal Reed it was grades not Arizona that kept her from running D1. She ran JC and did pretty well. As for 25-40 miles a week in high school, yeah let's go back to that and not have the great runners we have now. If done correctly they can run 50-65 miles (working up from their freshmen year) and still have a great running career after high school.
crystal reed runs for uc santa barbara now after transferring from orange coast community college. she is doing well....

Have you ever tried math? 120 miles @ 10:00 pace is 20 hours a week of just running. "I'm sorry, Mrs. Peterson, but your son's grades don't matter anymore. We're going to run 120 miles a week!"
I know a lot of people like to sit down and write up crazy training schedules (90mpw no problem. Who cares that I am currently running 35) that they have no chance of doing. 120mpw is a lot of running no matter how slow and even with 4 years of build up I am guessing few can handle it.Besides you don't have to choose between hi or low mileage. You could do moderate (50-70) and go from there.

Several of those high mileage FV runners burned out and became nothing
Among the high mileage fools
Nick Arciniaga
Bethany Nickless
Crystal Reed
What happened to the coach of FV? I don't think that the high mileage guy is there anymore?
