So, I want to marry a girl and I also want to ask her dad for permission/blessing.
I figure I'll bring the mom flowers, but am not sure if I should get the dad anything.
Any advice?
Booze and Cigars are not an option.

No Booze or Cigars?
Hookers and blow.
Ask him to lunch, and then pick up the tab.
That is what I did, and it worked out well.
I wouldn't bring anything to the house for the dad. Flowers for the mother is nice, but nothing too fancy. Just a small, understated arrangement or plant.
If you take the dad to lunch though, don't worry about the flowers. Don't be an Eddie Haskell (sp?).
I did it over the phone. I didn't have to buy anything. That worked well because they were from out of town. If they had been in town, I would have taken them (both mother and father) to a simple lunch.
How about wrapping up the positive home pregnancy test strip? And subsequently you could give him a box of ammo for the shotgun.
The correct answer is: a goat.
DING!
If she is a grown woman I don't think you need her parents permission. She can make her own decisions.
What if the girl has no relationship with her biological father, and hates her step-father? Still a good idea to ask permission?
I did not know guys did this anymore.
While I find the idea quaint, it also has the smell of considering a daughter to be chattel.
I have always wondered if a dad said "no", what then?
What the hell.
This is the 21st century.
Women are not the property of their father, or of any other man. The only people who need to consent to a marriage are the two people who are actually getting married.

I was going to ask John Phillips that question but he was busy. So was his daughter.

Or minors.
No, I think it shows respect.
You don't have to phrase it as "Can I marry your daughter" so much as "I plan to ask your daughter to marry me, and wanted you to know."
There is nothing wrong with showing your future in-laws some respect. They will appreciate it. If he says no, tell him to f*** off.

It's an old fashioned tradition that parents appreciate. You aren't really asking for their permission, you're telling them that you're planning to ask their daughter to marry you and you're asking for their support.
I asked my wife's parents for their blessing, and it meant a lot to them. They thought it was thoughtful, and they still talk about it. They supported our relationship up to that point, but including them pretty much sealed the deal.
If your wife-to-be has a positive relationship with her parents, their opinion does matter, whether you like it or not. Your life becomes much more dramatic if they don't support your relationship. Even if you think it's old fashioned, this is still a good idea.
