Imogen Heap - The reigning Queen.
Queen of Autotune.
Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers
U2.
The only band to have hits in 3 decades.
The only band to have hits in 3 decades and continue to sell out stadiums.
PS, I am not a U2 fan. But I give them credit for doing something rare.

Ever hear of AC/DC?

There's this guy named Bruce Springsteen. He plays in a band called "Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band." You should check him out.
Why? Are they dead yet?
Hits in three decades? I'm sure you could come up with a few more. The Who for example. Maybe the Kinks, probably Manfred Mann as well.

I think he means the only current band. U2 is the only band with a hit this decade and they also way back in 1983.
There just aren't any bands like that any more, they sort of stand alone.
The Stones had a pretty good album in 2006 but havn't really had a hit of any sort since 1997.

"Way back" in 1983. Hahaha!
AC/DC hit it big in 1979 with "Highway to Hell" and is CURRENTLY touring to support their latest album, "Black Ice", which was the 2nd best selling album of 2008.
That overlaps FOUR decades (70's, 80's, 90's, 00's).
U2 cannot touch this no matter what you want to believe.

From Midnight Rambler to Paint It Black to Satisfaction to Sympathy for the Devil to my favorite all-time 'rock/pop' song, Gimme Shelter...the Stones were my favorite band as a teen growing up in the 1970s. However, IMHO, after 1971's Exile on Main Street, they never again turned out anything of real significance...certainly nothing that measured up to their own early high standards.
Having said that, has any band since objectively turned out a body of work to match theirs...and sustained that output over the long haul?
In terms of staying relevant and turning out truly good memorable music, then I think U2 has them beat. I can't think of another band that compares in terms of combining longevity with relevance and quality. (I've never been a Bruce fan.)
I'm probably too old and too removed from paying close attention to the music scene anymore to offer an informed opinion about bands that could be mentioned in this conversation. The Killers? The Flaming Lips? Interpol? Personal favorites, but none of them have the high profile or hit-making potential to make a run at it. I doubt that we'll see another Rolling Stones or U2 or Beatles come along. The music business is so different these 30 or 40 years on. Cable and the Web have changed everything,...creating stars overnight...most of whom the public quickly grows tired of. Video, in particular, really changed everything, didn't it? The radio, and vinyl,...that's when The Rolling Stones ruled. And that world is gone.
