In the NCAA 800 final in early June Wheating injured a calve muscle.
Last Friday he was seen to (still) be using crutches. (As a "precaution") Same injury?
One has to wonder. Especially anyone who has had a nagging calve injury. The are very often re-occurring once scar tissue has settled in, and become a chronic problem. Additionally, they lead to favoring, which means he could have other problems.
To me, the fact that he is on crutches, cautionary or not, a full 12 weeks after the injury...at his age...is very alarming. I don't ever recall a runner that young tearing a calve muscle in a race when I was in college. Tendon troubles, hamstrings, quads. I calve injuries seemed to be primarily the providence of older runners, after years of use.
Hopefully he'll heal and be okay. It has, however, already been intimated that he is out for cross country - something not neccesary for him, but something he enjoys alot.
Anyone experience a calve tear in college and get through it okay...so that it did not become a chronic problem?
