I was reading through some stuff I found from Jack Daniels and I was interested in some comments he made about tempo running and breathing rhythm. He was basically saying not to train faster than a 2-2 breathing rhythm. I understood the 1-1 breathing rhythm to be 1 breath per 1 step. But wouldn't a 2-2 be the same thing 2 breaths per 2 steps is the same as 1-1. I must be mixing something up. Can anyone shed some light on this for me.
2-2 is breathe in, breathe in, breathe out, breathe out.

2-2 is breathe out for 2 steps and then in for 2 steps
1-1 is out for 1 in for 1
If this is the case what about 2-1? Is it in for 2 or out for 2? I'm assuming out is more important than in.
I've seen people talk about doing 2 in, 1 out, but I can't. I have asthma and it's like just breathing in and out that fast is a problem. My everyday runs are 3 in, 2 out. (Recovery 3 and 3) As I start getting around tempo I throw a 2 in, 2 out before each one, and upper end 2 in, 2 out with a 3 in, 2 out every fifth set. I do this intentionally because I think I have a leg length issue and I want the first exhale, which seems to be the strongest, to switch feet back and forth. A 2 in, 2 out would always keep it on the same foot. Probably sounds weird, I know.
I think you are wasting your time and energy. Just breathe.

I ran for a D1 CC and track program with some guys that eventually became Olympians...none of us practiced any type of breathing rhythm...we just ran.
I do 2-2, it's just a natural thing that I've picked up on, sometimes if I'm having a shitty run I concentrate on it and it takes my mind off of the work, but otherwise it just happens.
I just started doing tempo runs for the first time and I always go way to fast and end up dog tired at the end. I'm trying to find something I can do to let me know that I'm pushing too hard. I found this looking through some Daniels information earlier today and thought it might help, but I was a little confused.
I'm trying to improve my lactate threshold by not going into aerobic.
Any of you have a better suggestion to help me stay in the right training pace range? Or do you just want to criticize?
