Brett's quote is misleading. All of these elite athletes act like life is sooo dificult financially.
1. Did Adidas have matching funds? In other words...Was it really only an $8k payday? Was there a bonus for being a national champion? Was there a time bonus? Was there a bonus for making the World Team?
I believe that it was closer to a $20k pay day, but if you shared that with us it would prevent a different picture of the "poor starving runner".
2. How can a guy making $8 per hour afford to travel all over the country to run races and stay in nice hotels? People living below the poverty line do not have those advantages. Those things are paid for by their sponsors and the races. However, if you counted that perk as income he would no longer be a "poor starving runner".
3. Who is paying for his housing, his coaching, his massages, his medical? His sponsors. but once again "no poor starving runner".
I make $40k a year and I can not afford the lifestyle that he lives. I get so tired of reading all of this horse shit in an attempt to make every american distance runner seem like Prefontaine.
