8000/20 hrs a week / 50 weeks=$8
Really? Minimum wage in AZ is $7.25. Is an 8-5 working at a bank or warehouse really out of reach? He needs to join a union or be a teacher or something.

I'd kill for $8/our.
Stanford grad making 8 bucks an hour... me a community college grad pulling in 110K a year ... whats going on here?
No stress or expectations in $8 an hour job. He can concentrate on running.

If only you were a little smarter...

you can
Really? How?
Keep in mind that even though they call this a 20hr/week job, he might not be able to work that much, and might work less than 50 weeks a year. Traveling for races and whatnot can take time... So he might be making more like $10/hr or so. Frankly, that's about what you'd expect for someone in their first year or so at a Kinko's type place.
Mr. Mountain had it right about no stress or expectations. Sure, a Stanford grad could probably find a job making quite a bit more money, but it'd likely be full time, and might have more expectations of him. Really, unless you land some rare sweet gig, how many part time jobs pay well? Maybe waiting tables would pay a bit better, but the most profitable hours probably wouldn't fit with the running monk lifestyle I'm sure he's aiming for.
So, if you were trying to work approx. 20hrs/wk, with hours that are predictable daytime hours that will allow for quality training, yet also flexible enough to allow for frequent travel, etc., what better options are there?
Trust me, waiting tables>his job
he'll have a lot of energy and focus for running cuz, with that lifestyle, he won't be getting any second dates.
But he will be winning National Championships.

A couple thoughts:
1) It sucks how hard it is for our 2nd tier athletes (by that I mean not the runners whose base salary is 100k+ per year) to make ends meet. Yes, they could get a job. But anyone who has had a job knows that it really gets in your way of rest, the most important component of training.
2) It sucks that the European circuit has their act together dishing out prize money, but the US - not so much.
