Anyone have any experience? Is it worth considering for a 9 flat guy? Has the limited success been bad coaching/bad recruiting classes or what. Looking for the good academics/athletic combination (also looking at Stanford, Gtown, Mich). Thoughts?

As a 9 flat guy out of high school, stay away from Duke.
Duke's men run?
Duke has continually gotten some of the best recruiting classes every year, yet continually fails to do anything with the talent they collect. Look at their regional finishes every year. They aren't even close to making nationals despite catching atleast 3-4 Footlocker guys every year. Stormin' Norm just isn't a competent coach.
You need to add University of Virginia to your list. Get in quickly while you still can. That distance / middle distance program is taking off in a big way and you'll have a hard time walking on or getting aid there before too long.
How about the Ivies? Try Princeton.
I second Virgina
3-4 Foot Locker Finalists a year is far from the truth. Duke's only had 3-4 Foot Locker Finalist recruits in their history, and they've all come within the last few years. The program is turning around, and some their current top runners were less-touted recruits out of high school who have improved to the level of 1st Team All-ACC and All-Region. They've also had the misfortune of some injuries and of recruiting top talent who had no desire of continuing to compete in college. Watch out for them this fall.
