Nothing wrong with that, but I do not see how what Teg does diminishes what Ritz did.
Teg's run wasn't gutsy nor special. Sure it is a great time, but he just hung onto the back of the lead group for the whole race and didn't kick down anyone at the end. Some would call that chicken shitty.
Some would call that making running sub-13 look a lot easier than when Ritz did it.
It does not in any way diminish what Ritz did. Tegenkamp had already run 13:04, we figured he'd be capable of this.
Teg made it look routine for elite Americans. Before Ritz looked like he was on a whole other level

Yeah,Teg just ran faster than Lagat in the 5k and dropped a field of about 15 other runners (he was not in the back or even close ever in this race) Why don't you try racing in the front tomorrow in your local 5k and then get back with us on how you did!!!!!!

Go back to your mom´s basement and continue to do that stuff with your right hand.
Stop giving Teg a handicap because he is white american. Teg has the kick to race these guys but it appeared he was just content on sub13.
He is no Craig Mottram.

Thank God that he is not Craig Mottram (because he is heading south and staying there) Teg did not kick hard today because he was "in new territory". The kick will be there off of that pace in the future and 12:52 is definitely a possibility for Teg (maybe Ritz also)
Maybe Teg wasn't able to change gears and produce a kick, but to me it didn't look like he was content with his position. He tried a couple times to move up in the final pack but couldn't get anywhere.
I'm lookng forward to the first all American sub 13 race.
both guys have proven to be in 13:05-13:10 shape recently. it's a commonality now for teg to go out and run 13:08ish (63's) and with ritz' 27:22 and his 13:45 at altitude, they knew he was at least in 13:10 shape. so both guys were in the same ball park; i don't think one performance diminishes the other though- not many americans are in the same ballpark as them right now. even solinsky DNFed. i could see a rested rupp having the capability to go 13:00-13:05 and possibly sub-13 in the future. i could see webb doing also if he returns to his former 3:32/3:50 fitness.
and hopefully it does become more of a standard in american distance running now. to be able to run with the kenyans you have to be able to cover any moves anyone makes. it was gratifying to see tegenkamp strain to go with the pack but still be able to keep up. he was definitely running out of gas as he ran that last lap in about 60-61, but then again, his body hasn't run like that before.
another thing i think some people forget is that, according to schumacher, teg was injured for about 8 weeks during their base/post-base training. i imagine having some rest was a positive thing for his body, but 8 weeks of sub-par training could probably make a significant difference later on in the season. so after their first trial with altitude training, i imagine they'll know what to do next year to become even stronger and fitter and then maybe instead of tegenkamp just trying to hang on for sub-13 maybe we'll see him developing a kick to pick off some of those guys at the end and finish in 57-58.
since there are no world champs/olympic games next year, it could be a year for tegenkamp to focus on developing a bit more strength, maybe do some 10k's finally, but only for the sake of developing more strength to build on for the 2011 and 2012 seasons. i imagine that is when he may be at his best, if not now. hopefully we'll see these guys run some closer races against the east kenyans. hoepfully we'll see one of them run 7:30 and 27:10, if not faster.
I would say Ritz and Teg's performances also make the Kenyan and Ethiopian times less impressive. The world leader was a 12:52 this year and you have a couple lazy white guys who wasted their talent going through the American collegiate system 4 and 6 seconds back.
Teg came through 4600m at 12:01 and finished in 12:58, which is more like a 57ish last lap, not 60-61. He was giving it what he had, but those other 6 guys just had more left than he did.
