I wanted to gauge the interest in and knowledge of sport psychology in the running community. The word psychology often has a negative connotation as a "bad thing" or that one is seeing a "shrink." Just wanted to see if people have read books, actually used one (and if it was a sport science trained consultant, generally teaches psychological skills, or a clinical psychologist), or what people think of the field.
The world would be a better place if people where taught "psychological intelligence" at age appropriate levels from the start of schooling.
The challenge with psych, is there are so many branches that it becomes unwieldy for most people.
And let's face it, most people are on automatic most of the time, not really wanting to get informed and intelligent about how they work.
...And this site is a perfect example of it.
What was The Secret, they wanted to know; in a thousand different ways they wanted to know The Secret. And not one of them was prepared, truly prepared, that it had not so much to do with chemicals and zippy mental tricks as with that most unprofound and sometimes heartrending process of removing, molecule by molecule, the very tough rubber that comprised the bottoms of his training shoes. The Trial of Miles; Miles of Trials. How could they be expected to understand that?

Psychology is not all about thinking. There is no separation of the mind and body. The BRAIN, which is in the head, is where the mind resides, and also in the brain is where the emotional centers are, as well as massive networks of neurons with electo-chemical processes going on all the time. Emotions *and thoughts co-exist here are and are triggered here. Old school: Thoughts create emotions. Current research: Emotions and thoughts take place at all times simultaneously, and exist together at all times (less consciously when you are asleep.) Thoughts can increase and trigger emotions (energy in motion, fresh or re-felt from previous experience/learning.)
So psychology is not just about thought patterns, learned concepts, paradigms and filters etc. It is also about brain physiology, neuroscience (the science of how the brain works physiologically and electro-chemically), as well as conditioning etc.
Psychology, and most every day human conception of it, is in may ways still in the dark ages.
