I noticed yesterday that with the exception of the 1000m (which is rarely run on the circuit), all the men's middle distance world leads this year from 800m up to and including the 3000m, were set prior to July! Most seem to have done their best running early in the season and outside of Europe, while the likes of Kaki, Kiprop and a few others seem to have really dropped their form at, and subsequent to the World Champs.
Here are the leading times and dates:-
800m~ 1:43.09 - Kaki, DOHA ~ 8.5.09
1500m~ 3:29.47 - Choge, BERLIN ~ 14.6.09
Mile ~ 3:48.50 - Kiprop, EUGENE ~ 7.6.09
3000m ~ 7:28.37 - Kipchoge, DOHA ~ 8.5.09
I always seem to remember that most of the fastest times used to be set after championships in years gone by.
Why have so many middle distance guys gone off the boil in the latter half of the season?
