What was it about REM or 10,000 Maniacs or that ilk that was considered "Alternative"?.....None of it was particularly far from the norm

They were being compared to Phil Collins. Both of the groups mentioned were more 80s bands anyway.
I always though the 90's alternative start/was about Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Smashing Pumpkins, etc... Grunge rock... A big changes from that crap hair band stuff from the late 80's/ 1990-91 (like Poison, Cinderella, etc. etc.)
10000 Maniacs and REM were more college radio/independent music stuff.. Plus REM was alternative in the 80's, in the 90's they were more mainstream, shiny happy peopleish... 80's REM is better...
Late 80's Early 90's Alternative was a rather impressively diverse genre, encompassing folk traditions, 80's synth pop, punk, plain old rock'n'roll and more.
Early REM fell into this Genre, but never 10000 Maniacs.
yeah you have to look at context. "alternative" became a lable to ID any band that wasn't the typical cookie cutter type of act that was SOO abundant in the 80's and early 90's.
You had Phil Collins, Huey Lewis, Cindy Lauper, Paula Abdul, etc.. just a lotta overly produced slicked up acts.
Video was still very new and it helped to propel a lot of music acts to the top simply because they had good videos. Being able to play live and actually perform music fell to the way side.
"Alternative" is a marketing term.
Marketing terms are hardly, if ever, precise or meaningful.

Since this was about the biggest selling pop music of the early 1990s, what was it supposed to be an alternative to? Less popular music?
Marketing term is right.
