well, I started using garmin forerunner 305 about a week ago, and during the weekend, I tried to use the pace alerts feature, where you can set a minimum or maximum pace alerts.
So I said nice feature,as I am planning to go sub 3 for the first time for my next marathon in 3 weeks time, I could just set 4:15 as the minimum pace (per km, 6:48 per mile), and just follow that, and that alarm will wake me up when I am slacking... but I wanted to get used to it first...
So I set th minimum pace alert to 4:45 per km (that is 7.36 per mile), as I was doing about 18Kms and didn't want to run fast but didnt want to end up running very slow. Anyways, the alarm was getting off almost the whole time, and I was a bit surprised because I didnt feel I was running that slow. By the end of the race, I check my average pace for the whole race, and it was 4:22 (that is like 6.58 per mile), I even had a couple of Km under 3.55 (6.14 per mile) pace!
I think this can be due to one of these two reasons (or both)
-the instantaneous speed calculations in the 305 are not accurate enough (i.e. they show lower speeds than the actual) (To begin with, I don't know what window of time or distance the 305 uses to calculate the instantaneous speed, 1m, 10m, ...? 1sec, 10 sec,...?)
-I was reacting too much to the alarms, running a bit too fast whenever the alarm sounded, slowing down, and so on...
any of you using the same watch? and if so, have you noticed a similar behavior? if the watch is working OK and it is due to my reaction to the alarm, any suggestions on how to handle it? ...
