I know a lot of athletes have had a year or two where maybe they ran a marathon in the fall and/or spring and then ran some track races in late spring and maybe through summer, but would it be realistic to make this a yearly training routine?
I say this because of how many athletes have benefited on the track from running marathons, like Jen Rhines, Dathan Ritzenhein, and others. There are always people who boast about the classic Lydiard style of training for marathons to develop a big aerobic base.
Training for a fall marathon or even a late winter/early spring marathon, even if it isn't until April, would still leave a good 3-4 months to shift training focus on get on the track to some 3k-10k races. Basically, training for the marathon would be the 'base training' for the year, and depending on the athlete, an athlete could start training in late late aug/early sept for a november marathon and still have time to shift his/her training back to the track using winter as a transition period.
Any thoughts on whether this would be a viable yearly training plan for multiple years?
