There may already be a similar thread, but I looked and couldn’t find one. I was curious that the world leader this year was set last week by Bekele in 12:53, when the same man set a world record in 12:37 just 6 years ago at the age of 21. Below are the top 5 times in the world of each year in the 5000m, taken from IAAF’s world best lists.
Notice that Bekele is consistently right around 12:50, (as is the rest of the world) right up until the 2004/2005 season, where he suddenly blasts a WR. Then beginning in 2006, after his wife passes amid sudden and strange circumstances that led to drug accusations of Hermen’s other athletes, Bekele returns to the 12:50 clocking ballpark of old.
I understand that I will get flamed for being “ethnocentric” and “jealous” of African runners, but honestly, how can you look at this “progression” and pretend that something is not right here? Did Bekele suddenly tire of chasing WR's? I suppose it's possible that he feels the need to only retain winnings and not chase his old, seemingly invincible record, but to be consistently 12-13 seconds off of your PR at that level year to year when meet promoters are setting up record attempts and rabbits for you?
