I have a runner on my team who is a good runner and very talented. As a freshman he ran around a 9:30 3200 off of maybe at most 15 miles per week, so pretty talented.
The problem is that he has a bad attitude in general and is very arrogant. During the track season, he would constantly skip practices and show up only when he felt like it. This would mean he would really only run around 2-4 days the whole week, and in reality is mileage was probably usually just like 10-15 mpw.
He also constantly talks back and feels like he deserves all the attention. To quote his exact words, he has said before that "I should only train him (and maybe one other runner who is around that fast, but much older)." Obviously I can't do this because there are many other runners to coach too (I coach boys and girls) and many of them work a lot harder but just don't have the talent.
He is also very arrogant and is constantly belittling his teammates or making fun of them about how they "will always see the back of him."
Overall, just a bad attitude. I have tried speaking to him about it, but he just doesn't listen/pushes me over. The problem is that he is talented and shows a lot of promise that it's hard for me to make him leave, etc... just because he's fast and could be scoring points. The team is on the border of making the state meet, and so the points he gets would be very valuable.
What can I do about this? I have tried talking, but it doesn't seem to be working. I think he also knows that it's hard for me to kick him off the team, and so tries to play off of that (skip practice, etc). Any suggestions would be welcome, thanks.
