So far, Hurricane Bill struck Newfoundland as a Category 1 hurricane:

(2009)
Hurricanes have also struck Maine and other parts of Canada several times during the past decade. However, Los Angeles, San Diego, and other parts of Southern California haven't been hit by a hurricane in over a century. Why is that the case? LA has a warmer climate than New England, so there should be more hurricanes hitting LA. Also, there are usually more hurricanes in the East Pacific off of Mexico than in the Atlantic, but all of them seem to magically drift away from Southern California:

Any ideas on why this is so? A mild hurricane would do wonders in putting out those stubborn wildfires in the LA basin.
